Juja MP George Koimburi is recovering at Karen Hospital after what former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has described as a harrowing abduction, involving torture and the injection of a chemical that damaged his vocal cords.
Speaking to journalists at the hospital on Monday, May 26, Gachagua said Koimburi was abducted in broad daylight outside a church. His wife was also reportedly targeted during the attack. The MP’s whereabouts remained unknown until he was found nearly 12 hours later, badly beaten, in a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Githunguri Constituency.

According to Gachagua, doctors informed Koimburi’s family that the MP lost his voice due to a chemical introduced into his system—likely through injection or inhalation. “He was found tortured, unable to speak, and in critical condition. The doctors say the injuries seem to have been inflicted by professionals,” Gachagua said.
He added that the MP is conscious and has documented his experience in writing since he is unable to speak. “Doctors are working to reverse the damage and restore his voice,” Gachagua noted.
Koimburi, a close political ally of Gachagua, was reportedly being pursued by police in connection with a land case. A prior arrest attempt had failed on Friday, prompting speculation about his sudden disappearance.
Police have denied involvement in the alleged abduction and are investigating the matter. Samples from the MP have been taken to laboratories to determine the nature of the chemical allegedly used.
Security teams have also visited the church where he was last seen, the plantation where he was found, and two hospitals where he received treatment.
Authorities are also probing how the individuals who rescued him knew where to locate him.
