Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked fresh political controversy after claiming that relief beans distributed by President William Ruto’s allies in Mt Kenya are causing a decline in men’s sexual performance.
Speaking during a joint interview with Kameme FM and Kameme TV at his Karen residence on Monday, 16 June 2025, Gachagua alleged that women in Laikipia County had raised concerns over the effects of the beans on their partners’ libido.
“I had told my people to take Ruto’s money and eat it. However, they should leave the beans being distributed to them. I am hearing that they are affecting men’s libido. I am not sure, but that is what I heard from women at Laikipia, where I had visited,” said Gachagua.
The former Deputy President further claimed that several women personally approached him during his weekend tour of Laikipia and reported that their spouses were underperforming sexually after eating the relief beans.
“They told me that when their men consume the beans, they [are] underperforming in their conjugal duties,” Gachagua stated.
He warned locals against consuming the distributed food, insinuating that there might be a deeper political plot against the Mt Kenya community.
Claims of targeted infertility plot
Gachagua suggested that the food relief exercise may be a cover for a sinister plan to reduce the fertility of men in Mt Kenya, blaming President Ruto for allegedly harboring ill intentions.
“They should not consume those beans, as we are not sure what Ruto is planning against us [Mt Kenya]. Maybe this is a plan to eliminate the Mt Kenya communities through these beans. Maybe these men will be infertile when they eat them. I really fear President Ruto on the bitterness he has with our people,” Gachagua warned.

He further alleged that a past attempt by Ruto to harm the region’s youth through the proliferation of illicit brews had failed, and that the bean distribution might be the next strategy.

“I have fears that there may be a plan to eliminate our people. I want to tell our people not to consume foods brought to them by Ruto, because you are unsure…” he continued.
“He wanted to finish our youth through illicit brews, but this plan proved futile… maybe these beans are a plan to cause infertility among us… you never know!”
MPs distributing beans
Gachagua emphasized the need for caution and called on locals to reject the beans altogether.
“Let’s be cautious. Those people [Ruto allies] should be told to stop bringing those beans. If anyone wants to empower our people, they should bring facilities like those we saw in Kapseret,” he concluded.
The beans in question have been distributed as part of a food aid initiative by various Mt Kenya MPs allied to President Ruto. Among the legislators reportedly involved are Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau and Murang’a’s Betty Maina.
Newsflash reached out to the two MPs for comment, but by press time, they had not responded to calls or text messages.

Just two weeks ago, controversy had already erupted around the same relief beans. Popular Kameme FM presenter Muthoni wa Kirumba claimed she had received complaints from listeners that the beans being distributed were unfit for human consumption
Her remarks prompted a fierce backlash from Murang’a Maina, leading to a heated exchange of accusations across social media platforms.
With Gachagua now amplifying the concerns to a political level, the issue is expected to spark further debate in the Mt Kenya region, which remains a crucial battleground in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
