Gachagua: Ruto has been calling me to re-join him

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that President William Ruto has been trying to reach him through persistent phone calls in a bid to persuade him to rejoin the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Speaking in an interview with Kameme FM and Kameme TV on Monday, 16 June 2025, Gachagua said that the Head of State has also made overtures to other key opposition figures, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa.

According to Gachagua, Ruto’s outreach is part of a larger campaign to weaken the opposition by drawing in influential leaders.

His remarks came amid speculation that Ruto had dispatched Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to Ukambani in recent weeks, allegedly to woo Kalonzo into working with the government.

“I spoke to Kalonzo… he can’t be lured to join Ruto,” Gachagua said.

He further revealed: “Wamalwa, too, has been called. He [Ruto] has also enticed me to go back. He had tried to call me but I did not pick up his call. I do not have his time,” said Gachagua.

Claims of political espionage

Gachagua also made startling allegations that while he was still Deputy President, Ruto secretly planted spies around him to monitor his movements and decisions.

“The problem we have been having is a group of people who were used by Ruto as his spies against me while I was in the office, and out the office without my knowledge. When I left office, he gave money to those whom I left with to spy me on my plans. However, I am getting rid of them one by one,” he said.

Gachagua added that the betrayal from close allies has made him more cautious and determined to root out those he considers infiltrators.

“They will keep making noise… saying I am a dictator. They are betrayers of our community! They are Ruto’s sycophants. I can’t give them any opportunity,” he declared.

He also asked for divine intervention to protect himself from what he described as widespread surveillance and underhanded political tactics.

“May God help me because there are so many people sent to me as spies.”

Gachagua went on to claim that some of the alleged spying efforts have extended to attempts to bug his vehicles and the places he visits.

“Sometimes when I take my cars for service, they are returned with recording devices. However, we usually check and remove them. I have special devices to check if there are recording microphones installed in where I visit,” he said.

On his decision to pitch his political camp in Mt Kenya, Gachagua said that he will not repeat the mistake former President Uhuru Kenyatta made of leaving a political void, thus giving leeway to Ruto.

“I will not allow Ruto to come and take the Mountain. I will not repeat Uhuru Kenyatta’s mistake as he allowed Ruto a through pass.”

“Even if I will be occasionally leaving the Mountain, I will still be coming back to ringfence it.”

At the same time, Gachagua termed his October 2024 impeachment as a blessing in disguise, saying that he is now better than he was as the DP.

“I thank God for separating me with Ruto. I don’t know how we would be working with him because I would be against all the things he is doing. I am now stronger and better off than when I was the DP.”
