Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has broken her silence following an attempted assassination on her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga, urging security agencies to investigate the matter and calling on residents to reject violence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 13, Wanga expressed deep concern over the Sunday night incident in which gunmen reportedly ambushed Magwanga’s convoy in what he described as a deliberate attempt on his life. The deputy governor had been returning to his home in Kabuor village, East Kamagak ward, Kasipul constituency, when unknown assailants trailed his vehicle and opened fire.
Magwanga told police he had received intelligence that he was being followed and decided to alter his route before reaching home. He notified his security officers, who were in a separate vehicle taking the usual route, to meet him. The attackers are said to have fired twice at the security vehicle, believing he was inside. His guards responded by returning fire, reportedly forcing the assailants to flee.

Governor Wanga urged residents to remain calm and stand united in the face of the attempted violence. “I am deeply concerned by reports of this incident involving my Deputy Governor,” she said. “Let us reject violence in all its forms and stand together for peace, justice, and the rule of law.”
She added that the timing of the incident, which comes just days after the death of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, has left the county in mourning and called for swift and impartial investigations. “This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of our leaders. I urge our security agencies to move swiftly and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
Magwanga recorded a formal statement with the police on Monday to aid in the investigation. Authorities have not yet made any arrests.
