Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has described the sacking of manager Ange Postecoglou as “emotionally difficult” but necessary, following a dismal domestic campaign that overshadowed the club’s European triumph.
Just days after Spurs lifted the Europa League trophy with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao, Postecoglou was relieved of his duties. The win marked the club’s first major silverware in 17 years. However, Tottenham’s 17th-place finish in the Premier League—their lowest in decades—left the board with little confidence in the team’s direction under his leadership.
“I don’t regret appointing Ange. I’m very grateful for what he achieved,” Levy said in an interview shared via Spurs’ official channels. “But we must remain competitive in all competitions. It was an emotionally difficult decision, but ultimately the right one.”
Taking over the reins is former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who has signed a contract through 2028. Known for his player development skills and tactical discipline, Frank is expected to inject a fresh philosophy and rebuild Spurs into serious contenders both at home and in Europe.
The club’s chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, who led the managerial search with Levy, revealed that more than 30 candidates were considered, with Frank emerging as the clear frontrunner. “Thomas stood out for his leadership, technical insight, and ability to elevate young talent,” Venkatesham said.
Levy echoed the sentiment, highlighting Frank’s “intelligence, communication skills, and outstanding character” as key factors in the decision.
Tottenham now hopes that Frank’s leadership will build on the Europa League success and help restore consistent form across all competitions, satisfying a fan base hungry for more than just one-off trophies.
Frank is expected to begin pre-season preparations immediately, with a focus on improving squad fitness and reinforcing weak areas through the summer transfer window. The club has also hinted at a renewed focus on academy integration, aiming to promote homegrown talent into the first team under Frank’s guidance.
