NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has strongly condemned the death of 31-year-old Albert Ojwang while in police custody, describing the incident as “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” and called for a swift, transparent, and credible investigation.
In a statement issued from State House, Nairobi, on June 11, 2025, the Head of State expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, extending his condolences to the family of the deceased, particularly Mr. Meshack Ojwang, Albert’s father.
“Like most Kenyans, and especially as a parent, I received the news of the death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody with utter shock and deep dismay,” President Ruto said. “I take this moment to extend my heartfelt condolences to Mr Meshack Ojwang and his family for the cruel loss of their beloved son.”
President Ruto condemned the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death, warning that any actions or omissions—whether by negligence or criminal conduct—will not be tolerated. He reminded the National Police Service of its vital role and responsibility as custodians of public safety.
“It must be borne in mind by every member of the National Police Service that whenever they take a person into custody, they assume a tremendous responsibility for that individual’s safety, security, and well-being,” he said. “They must discharge this duty conscientiously and without fail.”
Police accountability under scrutiny
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to enhancing police professionalism and accountability, the President emphasized that police reforms must also include eradicating misconduct within the ranks.
“It has been my conviction that affirming the institutional autonomy of the police service is key to raising its standards of professionalism, effectiveness, accountability, and credibility,” Ruto stated. “The Service must rise to the challenge of firmly dealing with crime while also rooting out unprofessional behaviour in its own ranks.”
In the wake of Ojwang’s death, President Ruto called on the National Police Service to fully cooperate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) in conducting a thorough investigation. He also urged Kenyans to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course without interference or premature judgment.

“As we mourn his passing, let us patiently but vigilantly follow the progress of the investigations,” Ruto advised. “I fully expect that the truth about what happened to Ojwang will be established in due course and that justice will be served.”
The statement comes amid growing public outrage and demands for accountability over rising cases of alleged police brutality and deaths in custody. Civil society organizations and human rights activists have vowed to closely monitor the investigation and press for systemic reforms to prevent further abuse.
Ojwang’s death adds to a troubling list of similar incidents in recent months, with many Kenyans calling for urgent intervention to restore trust in law enforcement.
