The Government has stepped in to break the deadlock surrounding the 2026–2027 SportPesa League, warning that administrative disputes should not derail competitive football or hinder player development.
Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya on Monday held consultations with chairpersons of SportPesa League clubs at Talanta Plaza in Nairobi as efforts to resolve the impasse gathered pace.
The meeting focused on concerns raised by clubs and possible interventions to pave the way for the resumption of league competition.
Mvurya said clubs remain central to Kenya’s football development, providing an important platform for identifying and nurturing talent across the country.
He cautioned that governance and administrative disagreements should not deny players regular competition and opportunities to advance their careers.
“Governance and administrative issues should not become a bottleneck to talent identification and development or deny our footballers the opportunity to compete and advance their careers,” warned Mvurya.
Stakeholders urged to embrace dialogue
The CS called on all stakeholders to embrace dialogue and compromise, urging them to put the interests of Kenyan football above individual or institutional differences.
He warned that prolonged disagreements could disrupt competitions and undermine efforts to strengthen the country’s football development pathway.

Mvurya’s intervention comes as Kenya steps up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
Building a strong player pool
Mvurya stressed that sustained competitive football will be crucial in building a strong player pool ahead of the continental tournament.
He said the Government would continue engaging clubs and other football stakeholders to secure a sustainable solution that protects the integrity of the competition, safeguards players’ opportunities and supports the long-term growth of football in Kenya.
