ODM leader Raila Odinga has dismissed growing endorsements of President William Ruto’s 2027 reelection bid by some party leaders, saying such moves are misguided and premature.
Speaking on Monday, September 22, during an ODM parliamentary group meeting at Maanzoni Lodge in Machakos County, Raila reminded members that the party has not passed any resolutions backing Ruto for a second term.
“We signed and agreed that we will work together up to 2027. We have not passed any resolutions apart from planning how we are going into the election. So wherever you are, don’t commit the party to things not discussed,” Raila said.
ODM plans for 2027 election
The former prime minister stressed that the party has not ruled out presenting a presidential candidate in 2027. He said ODM would make decisions in line with its internal processes and the law.
“We are ODM. Who told you that ODM will not have a candidate in 2027? We have a clear plan that we have negotiated and agreed on. Let us continue to implement that plan. Other decisions will be taken when the time comes,” Raila stated.

Raila clarified that his working arrangement with President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration was limited to the current term, expiring in 2027, and does not bind ODM beyond that timeline.
Sifuna warns against weakening the party
ODM secretary-general Edwin Sifuna echoed Raila’s sentiments, warning that an extended partnership with Ruto risked weakening the party ahead of the polls.
While noting that coalition matters are decided by the party leader, Sifuna said ODM must avoid complacency. “The ongoing collaboration with Ruto could cost ODM valuable preparation time. Our focus should be on ensuring the party is ready to mount a serious challenge in 2027,” he said.

Sifuna, who is also Nairobi senator, emphasized that ODM remains committed to fielding a presidential candidate in 2027 and cautioned against endorsing Ruto without clear timelines or agreed goals.
Growing tension within ODM ranks
The remarks highlight growing tension within ODM, with some leaders openly aligning with Ruto’s reelection bid while others push for the party to prepare its own candidate.
Analysts say the debate underscores the delicate balance Raila must maintain as he collaborates with Ruto in governance while keeping ODM united ahead of the 2027 General Election. The outcome of these internal disputes will likely determine whether the opposition party can mount a credible challenge to Ruto’s presidency.
