Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenyan government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has launched the Mama Kitchen Garden Initiative, a program spearheaded by the First Lady Rachel Ruto to address food insecurity, malnutrition, and economic challenges in the country.
The initiative aims to empower women by helping them establish sustainable kitchen gardens that will not only enhance household access to nutritious food but also create income-generating opportunities through the sale of surplus produce.
The National Mama Kitchen Garden Breakfast Meeting, held in Nairobi City County, was presided over by Principal Secretary (PS) for Agriculture, Dr Kipronoh Ronoh Paul. The meeting brought together key government officials, private sector representatives, and women leaders to discuss the initiative’s implementation and its role in promoting food security.

Aligned with Kenya’s Food and Nutrition Security Policy, the program seeks to promote grassroots empowerment by integrating nutrition-sensitive agriculture with economic growth strategies. The initiative underscores the importance of women’s participation in agriculture as a means to build food-secure communities and foster economic resilience.

The success of the program is highly dependent on collaboration between the government, private sector, and local communities. Stakeholders emphasized the need for access to agricultural inputs, training programs, and market linkages for smallholder farmers. By providing these essential resources, the initiative aims to transform Kenya’s agricultural landscape and strengthen food systems at the household level.
Through unified efforts, the Mama Kitchen Garden Initiative aspires to enhance Kenya’s agricultural productivity while ensuring long-term sustainability. The project also seeks to empower women by equipping them with knowledge and resources to produce nutritious food, thereby improving the overall well-being of families across the country.
