Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary and current Senior Advisor in the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), Moses Kuria, on Sunday delivered a pointed and sarcastic message to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following a violent attack on Gachagua’s motorcade at the PCEA Mwiki Church in Kasarani, Nairobi.
In a message posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Kuria wrote:
“THIS IS UTTERLY UNGODLY. LEAVE YOUR BACKWARD AND PRIMITIVE POLITICAL WARS OUT OF PLACES OF WORSHIP. TODAY WAS AIPCA KENOL RE-LOADED. THE LIGHTNING THAT WILL STRIKE US IS STILL LOADING. POLE SANA Rigathi.”
The comment drew widespread reactions online, with many interpreting it as a mockery rather than a genuine show of sympathy. The comparison to the 2020 AIPCA Kenol chaos — where political violence erupted during a church service ahead of then-Deputy President William Ruto’s visit — signaled Kuria’s warning that history could be repeating itself, only with roles reversed.
Gachagua points finger at Ruto
The incident at Mwiki Church occurred during a Sunday service attended by Gachagua. According to eyewitnesses, a group of goons stormed the venue, disrupting the event and attacking members of Gachagua’s convoy, causing panic among congregants.

A visibly agitated Gachagua, who addressed the press shortly after the incident, laid blame directly at President William Ruto’s doorstep. Gachagua accused Ruto of orchestrating the chaos through hired goons, drawing parallels with past political intimidation tactics.

“What happened today is shameful. Sending goons to attack me in church is not just a political act — it is sacrilegious,” Gachagua said. “This is how far the Kenya Kwanza regime is willing to go to silence dissent. But I want to tell President Ruto: if you think such cowardly acts will stop me, you are mistaken.”
He added that places of worship should be sacred and off-limits to political violence.
“Churches should never be battlegrounds. What we saw today is a return to the dark days — the era of state-sponsored violence. I served under you, I know your ways, and I will not be intimidated,” Gachagua declared.
Kuria’s political balancing act
Kuria, who has in the past shown both allegiance and criticism toward Ruto and Gachagua, continues to walk a political tightrope. His statement, laced with sarcasm, has left many wondering where his loyalties truly lie.

Political observers believe that Kuria’s post was a calculated jab, aimed at both exposing the political hypocrisy within Kenya Kwanza and positioning himself as a truth-teller in the brewing rift between the President and his former deputy.

A source close to Kuria said, “Moses is no fool. He knows exactly what he’s doing. That ‘pole sana’ was not consolation — it was provocation.”
The Mwiki incident marks the latest episode in the escalating fallout between Gachagua and President Ruto, with tensions rising as political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general election.
As the rift widens, analysts warn that internal divisions within the ruling coalition could fuel further instability, especially if places of worship continue to be dragged into political feuds.
