Former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has officially launched a new political party, The Future Party, signaling a significant shift in the political landscape of Kenya’s Mount Kenya region.
Ngunjiri, once a close ally of impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, announced the formation of the party on Friday, May 9, 2025, after receiving a Provisional Registration Certificate from the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
The announcement marks a notable comeback for the veteran politician who has in recent months distanced himself from Gachagua’s faction and aligned more closely with Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, a key ally of President William Ruto.
“Today marks a historic milestone for The Future Party! We’ve proudly received our Provisional Registration Certificate from the Registrar of Political Parties, cementing our commitment to transparency, democracy, and a bold vision for Kenya,” said Ngunjiri in a statement released shortly after the launch.
He praised the party’s supporters for their efforts in making the registration possible, adding, “Your passion, hard work, and belief in our mission have fueled this achievement. Together, we’re breaking barriers to build a nation that prioritizes innovation, equity, and opportunity for ALL.”
Breaking from the past
Ngunjiri’s political career has been closely tied to the power dynamics in the Mount Kenya region. A vocal supporter of Rigathi Gachagua during the 2022 elections, Ngunjiri later fell out with the former DP’s inner circle.
Though the reasons for the fallout remain unclear, observers suggest ideological differences and power struggles within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) may have contributed to the split.

His public appearances alongside Sudi in recent months have fueled speculation about his political leanings. However, Ngunjiri insists that The Future Party is an independent movement, not aligned with the State or the Opposition.

“This is a party that will chart its own independent political path,” he said, pushing back against claims that the party is State-sponsored. These assertions come in the wake of Gachagua’s own warnings that the government is allegedly funding splinter political outfits in Mount Kenya to sow discord and weaken his political base.
A new force in Mt Kenya?
According to political analysts, the launch of The Future Party comes at a time when the Mt Kenya region is experiencing political turbulence.
Analysts suggest that Ngunjiri’s move is both strategic and symbolic. With the 2027 general election approaching, the formation of a new party allows him to rebrand himself and position as a potential kingmaker, especially if he can rally support from disillusioned UDA members and other regional leaders.

“The party’s independence is its greatest strength,” said Githiomi Wangai, political analyst based in Nakuru. “If Ngunjiri can convince voters that this isn’t just another State-sponsored project, he could attract a significant following among young and progressive voters,” he told Newsflash.
Eyes on the future
Ngunjiri says the goal of The Future Party is to focus on innovation, economic equity, and inclusive governance. He emphasized the importance of policies that “empower every Kenyan,” calling for a fresh start away from tribal and personality-driven politics.
“We are building a home for every Kenyan who believes that our country’s best days lie ahead,” he said. “The journey is just beginning. Join us as we mobilize, engage, and champion policies that transform lives.”
