Maragua MP Mary Wamaua made a dramatic political shift on Thursday, April 3, as she officially decamped from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp to align herself with President William Ruto.
Speaking during Ruto’s tour of Murang’a County, Wamaua expressed her unwavering support for the Head of State and his administration.
Addressing the crowd, Wamaua posed a rhetorical question: “Are we okay with President William Ruto? Are we okay with Prof Kithure Kindiki?” The audience responded with resounding cheers, signaling approval of her political move.
Praise for development projects
Wamaua, who had previously been seen as a staunch supporter of Gachagua, cited recent government projects in her constituency as part of her reason for shifting allegiance.
She praised President Ruto for his commitment to development, highlighting the construction of a road and an irrigation project that had significantly benefited her constituents.
Talks with Kindiki and Ruto
The Maragua legislator also acknowledged Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, whom she described as a close friend. She revealed that she had been in discussions with Kindiki since November, gradually warming up to the idea of aligning with President Ruto. By December, she had started engaging in talks with the President himself.

“I told you, Your Excellency, that you are my friend. Only that you erred in a small way. To err is human,” she stated, alluding to past disagreements. However, she emphasized that the past was now behind them and that she was fully committed to supporting Ruto’s administration.
Biblical comparison to Naomi and Ruth
Wamaua’s declaration took a biblical tone as she likened her decision to the story of Naomi and Ruth in the scriptures. “And because His Excellency has asked a question, and my employers have spoken, you know here it’s like Naomi and Ruth, who said: ‘Where you go, I go. Whoever you call your God, I call him my God, and whoever you call your President, I will call him my President.’”
The MP’s statements underscored her newfound loyalty to President Ruto while signaling an end to her association with Gachagua’s camp. She assured the President of her unwavering support in his agenda for Murang’a and Maragua, pledging to play a unifying role in the county’s politics.
Call for unity in Murang’a
“There’s nothing else… My main job is to unite Murang’a County. There is no need to separate others. Only for those who don’t want to come. We shall unite with everyone,” she declared, emphasizing her commitment to political unity.
Seeking key role in government
In a direct appeal to Ruto, Wamaua requested to be entrusted with a key role in advancing the government’s development agenda in Maragua and the larger Murang’a County. “Use me as your right-hand man to advance works in Maragua and Murang’a County,” she stated.
Political implications
Wamaua’s shift comes amid an ongoing realignment of political forces in the Mount Kenya region, where leaders continue to position themselves in anticipation of future political dynamics.
