The political alliance between ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto appears to be facing uncertainty, raising questions about whether Raila is beginning to distance himself from the Head of State.
Speaking at a funeral service in Kiambu County on Tuesday, Raila dismissed claims that he had abandoned the opposition to work with Ruto, clarifying that the President was the one who reached out to him.
“There’s a lot of noise about me deserting the opposition to join Ruto. But I did not go to him—it was Ruto who came to me,” he asserted.

The remarks have fueled speculation that Raila is recalibrating his political strategy amid growing dissatisfaction within the opposition ranks. Some ODM loyalists have expressed unease over his perceived closeness to Ruto, fearing that it could weaken the opposition’s role in holding the government accountable.
Ruto defends union
President Ruto, on the other hand, has consistently defended his engagements with Raila, portraying them as a sign of national unity rather than political realignment. “We must work together for the good of this country. There is no problem in having dialogue with leaders across the political divide,” Ruto said recently at a public event.
However, political analysts argue that Raila’s latest comments could signal a strategic shift, possibly ahead of the 2027 elections. “Raila is a master political tactician. If he feels that the partnership with Ruto is not working in his favor, he won’t hesitate to change course,” said political analyst Professor Macharia Munene.
The question now remains: Is Raila slowly pulling away from Ruto, or is this just another chapter in Kenya’s ever-evolving political landscape?
As the country inches closer to the next election cycle, Raila’s next moves will be closely watched, with both his allies and opponents eager to see which direction he takes.
