Just days after former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu publicly dumped former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in favor of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, another of Gachagua’s allies appears to have quietly severed ties with him.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has taken a low-key yet decisive step away from the former DP, signaling a deepening rift within Gachagua’s camp.
Newsflash has exclusively established that Wamuchomba has deliberately distanced herself from Gachagua, opting instead for what insiders describe as an “independent political trajectory” in anticipation of a more ambitious political future.
Her recent behavior has added fuel to the speculation.
On Sunday, Wamuchomba was noticeably absent from a high-profile political meeting at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Mathira, Nyeri County.
The gathering, which brought together opposition figures and a cross-section of Mt Kenya leaders, was widely seen as Gachagua’s attempt to consolidate political capital amid increasing internal dissent. Wamuchomba’s absence was glaring.

Political observers say this silence is telling. “In politics, absence speaks louder than words,” said political analyst Eric Njenga. “When an outspoken leader like Wamuchomba keeps away from a key political ally’s event, that’s a message.”
The first public hint of Wamuchomba’s shifting allegiance came in a recent interview on NTV, where she offered unsolicited advice to Gachagua on his political strategy.
“Rigathi needs to realise that he has the Mountain with him. He doesn’t need to talk too much and punch again about the Mountain. He already has it,” she said.
“He needs to be seen as more accommodating to other communities. The same energy he is using for the Mountain, he needs to be seen to be advocating for the forgotten communities of this country.”
Pressed further, Wamuchomba maintained that her comments came from a place of goodwill. However, many within Gachagua’s circle viewed the remarks as a veiled criticism of the former DP’s narrow regional focus.
Police summons and political fallout
Her troubles intensified recently when President William Ruto toured Mt Kenya. During a stop in Githunguri, where Wamuchomba holds significant sway, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and other Ruto allies were heckled by residents. The chaos led to the summoning of Wamuchomba by Kiambu police, who accused her of inciting local youth against Ruto’s allies.

Following the incident, sources told Newsflash that Wamuchomba has gone underground, fearing for her safety.
“Gathoni is fearing that the State may use its machinery to intimidate her,” said a close confidant. “She has received threats and is not taking them lightly.”
On May 4, she posted a cryptic message on her social media platforms—a Machiavellian list of political life lessons—which many interpreted as a subtle jab at Gachagua’s style of leadership:
Life lessons from Niccolò Machiavelli
- Adapt to change and embrace pragmatism
- Understand human nature
- Fortune favors the bold
- Balance virtue with practicality
- Resilience is key to success.”**
The post was quickly reshared by Ngunjiri Wambugu, a clear sign of alignment between the two once-loyal Gachagua allies.
Eyes on 2027 and beyond
Political commentator Mumbi Kinuthia argues that Wamuchomba’s political calculations may already be underway. “She’s laying the foundation for something bigger—possibly the Kiambu governorship in 2027 or even a shot at the presidency, as she has previously hinted. Gachagua may no longer serve her political ambitions.”

Indeed, multiple sources told Newsflash that Wamuchomba has begun quietly building a political network beyond Githunguri. Campaign-style meetings have been held under the guise of development forums, and her team has been engaging influencers and grassroots mobilizers across Kiambu.
When contacted for comment, Wamuchomba played down the speculations. “Right now, my focus is fully on serving the people of Githunguri,” she told Newsflash. “That’s where my energy is.”
Despite her careful choice of words, insiders say her political trajectory is unmistakably clear.
“Gathoni has seen the writing on the wall,” said Njenga. “She knows that tying her political fate to Gachagua might not be the winning ticket in 2027. She’s choosing survival—and possibly greatness—over loyalty.”
