A highly anticipated television debate failed to take off on Sunday after two Members of Parliament backed out, reportedly in fear of facing a bold and outspoken political activist.
Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge and Othaya MP Wambugu Wainaina were set to appear on GTN TV for a political face-off with activist David Kimengere, the leader of the Sauti ya Mnyonge – Kujenga Kutetea Kenya lobby. However, the two lawmakers failed to show up, leaving the discussion to collapse before it even began.
Speaking to Newsflash, Kimengere confirmed that the MPs did not provide any explanation for their absence.
“They feared that I could have faced them head-on as I am non-partisan,” Kimengere stated. “I was ready to engage them on critical issues affecting the country, but they opted out.”
Attempts by Newsflash to reach the two legislators for comment were unsuccessful, as they did not respond to calls or messages.
A bold critic of political elites
Kimengere is known for his blunt and independent critique of Kenya’s political leadership. While acknowledging President William Ruto’s shortcomings, he insists that the Head of State must still be respected as the leader of the country.
“The President is not always right, but he is always the President,” he remarked, underscoring his belief in constructive criticism rather than outright hostility.

He also criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for what he termed as an “unpresidential” approach in critiquing Ruto.

“While President Ruto may have erred in some ways, the former DP crossed the boundaries. He could have criticized him in a diplomatic way. That is my message to the Mt Kenya people,” Kimengere said.
A history of unwavering advocacy
Kimengere has built a reputation as a fearless activist, unafraid to challenge the political establishment. In February, he made headlines after petitioning the African Union to reject Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, citing concerns over his leadership credentials.
His latest encounter with the two MPs adds to a growing list of political figures who appear hesitant to engage him in direct debates. Political analysts suggest that Kimengere’s fearless approach and in-depth political knowledge make him a formidable opponent in public discussions.

“Many politicians prefer controlled debates where they can push their narratives without much scrutiny,” said political analyst Peter Mwangi. “Activists like Kimengere disrupt that comfort zone by asking tough questions and challenging evasive responses.”
With Kimengere’s rising influence in political discourse, many are left wondering whether more leaders will be willing to engage him in future debates or if his presence will continue to send them running.
