A recent online opinion poll has placed Leshau Pondo ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kamau Gathungu as the leading contender for the Ndaragwa parliamentary seat in the 2027 elections.
The poll, which gauged voter sentiment on potential candidates, saw Gathungu emerge as the preferred choice, outshining seasoned politicians such as Jubilee Party (JP) Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and the current MP, George Gachagua.
According to the results, Gathungu secured the top spot, with Kioni coming in second and Gachagua trailing in third place. Other notable contenders in the poll included Gitau Njamba, Unicore, and former area MP Waweru Nderitu.
Development track record earns public confidence
One of the key factors contributing to Gathungu’s popularity is his impressive development record in Leshau Pondo ward. Throughout his tenure as MCA, he has spearheaded numerous infrastructure projects, improved local schools, and championed better healthcare services.

His hands-on approach to addressing the needs of his constituents has earned him widespread support beyond his ward.

“Kamau Gathungu has always been at the forefront of development,” said Joseph Mwangi, a resident of Leshau Pondo. “We have seen him deliver results on the ground. If he can do this at the ward level, we believe he can do even more for Ndaragwa.”
Another resident, Mary Wanjiru, echoed the sentiments, emphasizing Gathungu’s commitment to community welfare. “He listens to the people and works closely with us. He is not like other politicians who only show up during elections. That is why we support him,” she stated.
Strong grassroots network gives him an edge
Gathungu’s deep-rooted connections with the people of Ndaragwa have also played a significant role in his rising political fortunes.
Political analysts believe this strategy has given him a competitive edge over his rivals. “Kamau Gathungu understands the dynamics of local politics,” said James Karichu, a political observer. “His ability to mobilize people at the grassroots level, coupled with his development agenda, makes him a strong candidate.”
Residents have also pointed out that his accessibility and willingness to engage with locals set him apart from other politicians. “We see him in our villages, at public meetings, and even at community projects,” said John Ndungu, a trader in Ndaragwa town. “He is one of us, and that is why people trust him to lead.”
A people-centred leader with a vision
Many locals believe Gathungu’s leadership style is what Ndaragwa needs to move forward. His focus on addressing the everyday challenges of residents, rather than engaging in political theatrics, has resonated with many voters.
“Leadership is about service, not empty promises,” said Grace Muthoni, a youth leader in the area. “Gathungu has shown that he is about action. If he wins in 2027, we are confident he will work for the people.”

Gathungu has remained humble in the face of growing support.

When reached for comment, he thanked the people of Ndaragwa for their confidence in his leadership but maintained that his primary focus remains serving the people of Leshau Pondo.
“I am truly grateful for the support and trust the people have shown me,” he said. “For now, my priority is to continue delivering on my promises to the people of Leshau Pondo.”
As the 2027 elections draw closer, it remains to be seen whether Gathungu’s growing momentum will translate into victory at the ballot.
However, one thing is clear—his influence in Ndaragwa politics is undeniable, and he is shaping up to be a formidable contender in the race.
