Jubilee Party’s presidential candidate, Dr Fred Matiang’i, has come out in defence of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta amid claims that he has been meddling in other political parties’ affairs.
Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after chairing Jubilee’s first meeting of the year, Dr Matiang’i, the party’s deputy leader, expressed concern over government officials reacting negatively whenever the former president shares his views on national issues.
The former Cabinet Secretary argued that handing over power to President William Ruto does not strip Mr Kenyatta of his right to voice opinions on matters affecting the country. “Even as a retired head of state, our party leader has the right to participate in issues of national interest. Our colleagues in the national leadership should focus on their responsibilities instead of targeting him and dragging him into irrelevances,” Dr Matiang’i said. He added that Mr Kenyatta’s continued presence on the political stage seems to unsettle certain quarters, including officials within government.
Jubilee emphasises multiparty harmony
Dr Matiang’i also refuted claims that Jubilee was attempting to weaken the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the 2027 General Election. He stressed that the party supports a political environment where all parties can thrive without interference. “We are a peaceful party and wish all political players well as we move forward. We are not in conflict with anyone, and we genuinely believe in multiparty democracy. We hope other parties competing with us succeed, as this strengthens Kenya’s democratic aspirations,” he said.

He clarified that while coalition talks are ongoing among various parties, neither Jubilee nor Mr Kenyatta is involved. “Those parties have been having internal conversations and arrangements. We have no role in those discussions, nor does our party leader,” Dr Matiang’i stated.
Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni also dismissed allegations regarding misuse of funds during the 2022 General Election. He noted that Mr Kenyatta supported former ODM leader Raila Odinga, who contested on the Azimio ticket but lost to Dr Ruto. Mr Kioni described claims made by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed as irrelevant distractions. “Our party leader was raising funds for the Azimio party during the election, part of which was meant for paying agents. If the funds had been used wisely, Raila Odinga would have secured victory,” he said.
