Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has intensified his political charm offensive in Luo Nyanza, in what observers view as a calculated move to secure the region’s loyalty ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The former Vice President on Thursday staged a dramatic visit to Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, the ancestral home of the late Raila Odinga, where he donated 100 cattle to the Odinga family.
The symbolic gesture has sparked intense debate within opposition circles, with growing speculation that Kalonzo is seeking to consolidate the support base historically loyal to Raila and the ODM establishment.
Political insiders interpret the gesture as part of Kalonzo’s broader bid to establish himself as the natural successor to Raila, whose decades-long political dominance continues to shape Kenya’s opposition politics.
During the colourful ceremony in Bondo, Kalonzo received a warm reception from Raila’s widow Mama Ida Odinga and Siaya Governor James Orengo, both of whom praised him for his long-standing partnership with the veteran opposition chief.
“I am not a politician, so don’t expect me to bring in any politics,” Mama Ida told the gathering. “But from what I know, Kalonzo was a friend of Baba for many years, and their friendship can never be erased.”
Governor Orengo echoed the sentiment, describing Kalonzo’s association with Raila as “genuine and time-tested.” He lauded the Wiper leader for standing by Raila through three presidential contests — in 2013, 2017, and 2022 — even when political tides seemed unfavorable.
Courting the Odingas — and Orengo
Sources close to the event told Newsflash that Kalonzo’s grand reception in Siaya was far from coincidental. According to insiders, the Wiper boss has been quietly nurturing relationships with key ODM figures in what is seen as an attempt to build a united opposition bloc capable of challenging President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza in 2027.
Behind the scenes, talks are reportedly underway to persuade Governor Orengo to join the United Opposition, which comprises Rigathi Gachagua (DCP), Martha Karua (PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP–Kenya), Fred Matiang’i (Jubilee) and Justin Muturi (DP).

If successful, the alliance would mark one of the most formidable political formations in recent years, potentially uniting previously rival factions of Azimio into a single, cohesive force.
Kalonzo’s recent foray into Nyanza, analysts say, underscores his intent to strengthen ties with Raila’s political base while reassuring loyalists that his mission is to preserve Raila’s reform legacy rather than replace him abruptly.

“By presenting the cattle and invoking Jaramogi’s name, Kalonzo was sending a symbolic message — that he respects Raila’s lineage, history, and political heritage,” said political scientist Dr Lydia Wekesa. “It was both a cultural gesture and a political statement.”
Family insiders also revealed that certain Odinga family members view Kalonzo’s outreach as a recognition of his steadfast loyalty during Raila’s political battles. “We know who stood with Raila when times were tough,” one family source told Newsflash. “That loyalty cannot be ignored.”
Ruto’s watchful eye
President Ruto’s allies are said to be monitoring Kalonzo’s maneuvers closely, wary that his growing presence in Luo Nyanza could revive opposition enthusiasm and disrupt Kenya Kwanza’s outreach in the region.
Political commentator Mwangi Gathungu told Newsflash that Kalonzo’s approach combines humility with strategy. “Kalonzo understands that without Nyanza, no opposition can survive,” he said. “By courting the Odingas and reaching out to Orengo, he is positioning himself as the bridge between the old guard and the next generation of reformists.”

Across Nyanza, the visit has triggered widespread debate. Local leaders — including Kisumu Woman Representative Roza Buyu and several Homa Bay county officials — have expressed openness to working with Kalonzo under a new reform-oriented coalition.

However, not everyone in ODM is convinced. Some party loyalists fear that an early succession conversation could divide the opposition or undermine Raila’s influence before he officially declares his intentions for 2027.
Orengo, while praising Kalonzo’s gesture, has maintained that Raila remains the central unifying figure in national opposition politics. “Baba’s political journey is not over,” Orengo is said to have remarked privately, signaling that Raila still holds the cards for 2027.
As the political temperature rises, both Ruto and Kalonzo are expected to intensify their engagements in Luo Nyanza — one seeking to divide, the other to consolidate. Whether Kalonzo’s charm offensive succeeds in bringing Orengo and the Odinga family fully into his corner remains to be seen.
