The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has confirmed that the death toll from the 35th Saba Saba anniversary protests has risen to 31, up from 11 reported on Monday, painting a grim picture of the nationwide demonstrations that rocked the country on July 7, 2025.
In a press statement released Tuesday evening, the Commission said it was still actively monitoring and following up on reports and incidents related to the protests. The statement, issued at 7:00 p.m., provided the latest human rights violations documented in the wake of the demonstrations.
According to the update, in addition to the 31 confirmed deaths, at least 107 individuals sustained injuries, 532 were arrested, and two cases of enforced disappearances were reported. The destruction of property was widespread, though the Commission noted the total value remained undetermined.
KNCHR condemnation
“The KNCHR strongly condemns all human rights violations and urges accountability from all responsible parties, including police, civilians, and all other stakeholders,” read the statement signed by Dr. Raymond Nyeris, Vice Chairperson of the Commission.

The Commission expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. It also reiterated its appeal to the public to report any human rights abuses or information related to the protests through its dedicated SMS number (22359), email (complaint@knchr.org), or toll-free line (0800 720 627).
The sharp rise in fatalities within 24 hours underscores the intensity of the protests, which were initially sparked by growing discontent over economic hardships and governance concerns. The Saba Saba Day, traditionally observed to commemorate the country’s pro-democracy movement, turned into a flashpoint for public anger, particularly among the youth.
While the protests began as largely peaceful demonstrations, reports indicate that confrontations between protesters and police escalated rapidly, leading to violent crackdowns in several parts of the country
