The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a comprehensive update on investigations into the death of former Cabinet minister and veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo, focusing on a white Toyota Probox whose appearance at the scene triggered widespread public interest and speculation.
The DCI issued the update on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
Jirongo died after sustaining critical injuries in a fatal road traffic accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway on December 13.
CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station in Karai later captured a Toyota Probox entering the premises shortly after Jirongo had driven in and exited, raising questions about its role in the tragic incident.
Probox ownership and movements traced
In the progress report, the DCI said a team of detectives travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace and interview individuals linked to motor vehicle registration number KDJ 564E. Statements recorded during the exercise established that the Probox is registered to Keringet Ward MCA and Nakuru County Assembly Majority Leader William Mutai, and is managed by his wife.
Investigators were informed that on December 11, 2025, the MCA’s wife hired out the vehicle to Denis Kipyegon Koech.

Koech reportedly intended to use the Probox to transport family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi, to receive their son who was returning to Kenya from New Mexico University in the United States.
According to the account given to detectives, Koech and his family left Keringet on December 12 and arrived at JKIA at around 5:00 p.m. After waiting several hours, their son’s flight landed at about 10:00 p.m. Following immigration and clearance procedures, the family began their return journey to Keringet shortly after midnight.
Witness account at Karai scene
While travelling back to Nakuru, the family reached Karai, the location where the fatal accident later occurred. Due to poor visibility, they stopped at Eagol Petrol Station to refill wiper fluid. During the brief stop, they observed Jirongo exiting the station and heading towards Nairobi.
Moments later, they reported hearing a loud bang and saw a bus dragging Jirongo’s vehicle along the highway. After completing the refill, they exited the station and briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of a petrol station guard who sought help in rescuing the victim.

The occupants of the Probox told investigators that they did not alight from the vehicle but used its headlights to illuminate the wreckage, as it was dark and no other vehicles had arrived. They left after more motorists reached the scene and traffic began to build up, continuing their journey home and arriving at around 6:00 a.m. It was later that morning that they learned the victim was Jirongo.
The DCI said it is interrogating the veracity of the statements and reassured Jirongo’s family, friends and the public that thorough, impartial investigations into the incident are ongoing.
