Citizen TV’s John Wanyama resigns to join Malava MP race

Citizen TV’s Eldoret-based reporter John Wanyama has resigned from Royal Media Services (RMS) to pursue a political career, setting his sights on the Malava parliamentary seat in Kakamega County in the 2027 General Election.

Wanyama formally tendered his resignation on July 3, 2026, giving the media company a one-month notice. According to his resignation letter, his last working day was set for August 4, 2026.

The journalist said he had made the decision after careful consideration as he sought to pursue what he described as a new path in public service.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from my position to pursue a new path in public service by vying for the position of Member of Parliament for Malava Constituency,” Wanyama said in the letter addressed to the RMS Human Resource Department.

He described the decision as an exciting new chapter in his journey and said his desire to seek the Malava parliamentary seat was driven by his intention to serve the community in a different capacity.

Wanyama also expressed gratitude to RMS for the opportunity to grow professionally and contribute to journalism during his tenure.

“My time at Royal Media Services has been rewarding and fulfilling, and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to grow as a journalist, tell impactful stories, and contribute to the organization’s mission,” he said.

Wanyama’s 11-year journalism career

RMS accepted Wanyama’s resignation in a letter dated July 14, 2026, signed by Human Resources Director Rose Wanjohi.

The media company thanked him for his service and wished him well in his future endeavours.

Wanyama, who had worked for RMS for more than a decade, joined the company on September 1, 2015.

In his resignation letter, Wanyama paid tribute to RMS Chairman and Vice Chair S.K. Macharia and his wife as well as Managing Director Wachira Waruru for their leadership and mentorship.

He said the experience, skills and professional relationships acquired during his time at the media house would remain valuable as he embarked on his political journey.

“I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition during the notice period and will complete any pending assignments while handing over my responsibilities and all company equipment in an organized and timely manner,” he said.

His resignation comes as more journalists set their eyes on various elective positions in the 2027 elections.

Some of the journalists in the media house eyeing various seats are Stephen Letoo (Kilgoris), Lulu Hassan (Mvita Constituency), Mwanahamisi Hamadi (Likoni Constituency) and Trevor Ombija (Nyakach), among others.

Journalist Faith Sudi Wamalwa has also announced her bid to vie for the Webuye West seat, where she will face incumbent MP Dan Wanyama.
