Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will vie for the presidency in the 2027 General Election on the ticket of The Equitable Party (TEP), positioning himself as one of the growing number of politicians seeking to succeed President William Ruto.
Sifuna was unveiled as the party’s leader and presidential flagbearer during an event in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4, attended by leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
Among those present were Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
The development gives Sifuna a political vehicle as he seeks to consolidate his bid for the presidency ahead of the 2027 polls. TEP, which is an already registered political party, has been adopted by Sifuna and his allies as their platform for the election.
Linda Mwananchi gains approval
Sifuna’s move comes days after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement name, following a prolonged dispute over the proposed political outfit.
The ORPP approved the name on October 1 after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal directed the Registrar to reconsider its earlier decision. The reservation is valid for up to 90 days.

By the time of going to press, organisers said more than 600,000 Kenyans had registered to join the movement.
Sifuna now joins a growing field of presidential aspirants preparing for the 2027 election.
His political profile has also continued to feature prominently in recent opinion surveys.
A Politrack Research Team survey conducted between September 15 and 25 placed President Ruto at 45.1 per cent, followed by Sifuna at 19.6 per cent and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka at 10.3 per cent.
The survey placed Sifuna as the leading opposition aspirant in the presidential preference poll.
