A political showdown is expected today, Monday, February 16, as United Opposition leaders prepare to head back to the office of Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja, to demand answers over investigations into a church attack targeting DCP leader, Rigathi Gachagua.
The opposition leaders are seeking an update on the progress of investigations into the January 25, 2026 incident at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri, where Gachagua and his allies were reportedly attacked.
The leaders had issued a two-week ultimatum to the Inspector General of Police on January 30, demanding that authorities identify and prosecute all those responsible.
Demands accountability
Speaking during a church service at Zimmerman PCEA Church on Sunday, February 15, Gachagua confirmed that the United Opposition would present themselves at the police chief’s office to follow up on the matter and push for justice.
“We were there two weeks ago and tomorrow [Monday], at 10:00 am we will go back to ask him why those people have not been taken to court,” Gachagua stated.
The opposition has maintained that the attack was politically motivated and has accused authorities of moving slowly in bringing those responsible to book. The leaders insist that failure to act decisively could undermine public confidence in the country’s security agencies.

On its part, the Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF), led by Kalonzo Musyoka, has announced plans to join Gachagua and other opposition leaders in seeking clarity on the status of the investigations. The move signals growing unity among opposition factions pressing for swift action.
The leaders have further threatened to organise what they described as “a mother of all demonstrations” if the individuals behind the attack are not identified and prosecuted, raising fears of heightened political tensions.
Police give investigation update
On Sunday, the National Police Service issued a statement providing an update on ongoing investigations into the incident and other security concerns across the country.
In the press release, the police said they had launched investigations immediately after receiving reports of alleged criminal activity.
“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to update the public on the progress of investigations relating to recent security incidents, including events reported at Witima Church last month and other public gatherings in different parts of the country,” the statement read.

The Service noted that officers had recorded statements, reviewed available footage, and analysed intelligence to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
“Upon receiving reports of alleged criminal activity, the Service promptly initiated investigations in accordance with the law. Officers have recorded statements, reviewed available footage, and analysed intelligence to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and to identify any individuals responsible,” the statement added.
The police further explained that the speed and success of investigations depend on cooperation from witnesses and complainants, urging affected persons to record official statements to support evidence-based conclusions and possible prosecutions.
Call for public cooperation
The police also appealed to members of the public with relevant information to assist investigators, emphasising that cooperation is essential to ensuring justice.
“The NPS continues to appeal to anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist investigating officers. This cooperation is essential to ensure that justice is not only pursued but demonstrably upheld,” the statement said.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and professionalism, stating that all security concerns would be handled objectively and in strict compliance with the Constitution. It added that investigations remain active and that further updates would be provided as appropriate.

Despite the assurance, opposition leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of progress, setting the stage for Monday’s high-stakes confrontation at the Inspector General’s office.
Political observers say the outcome of the meeting could shape the country’s political climate in the coming weeks, particularly if the opposition proceeds with its threat of mass demonstrations.
