Democratic Action Party (DAP) leader Eugene Wamalwa has intensified his political engagements, meeting Luhya elders on Saturday, 22 February 2025—just a day after holding separate talks with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The back-to-back meetings have fueled speculation about his political trajectory as Kenya’s political landscape continues to shift.
The meeting with Luhya elders, held in Bungoma, brought together influential community leaders to discuss the region’s political future.
Insiders indicate that Wamalwa sought the elders’ counsel on the best approach to unify the Western bloc and secure a stronger stake in national politics. The elders reportedly emphasised the need for unity among Luhya leaders and encouraged Wamalwa to play a leading role in the region’s political consolidation.
A region in political mix
Wamalwa’s engagements come at a time when Western Kenya’s political allegiance remains contested. President William Ruto has made significant inroads in the region, appointing key Luhya figures to his government and courting support through economic projects.

However, opposition leaders like ODM leader Raila Odinga and Kalonzo are also seeking to solidify their influence, particularly in the face of ongoing talks about a broader opposition alliance ahead of 2027.
Gachagua, who has positioned himself as the de facto leader of the Mt Kenya region, has been reaching out to different political players, possibly in an attempt to build alliances within the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition. His meeting with Wamalwa has raised questions about whether the former CS is being courted by the government or if it was merely a dialogue on governance and national cohesion.
On the other hand, Wamalwa’s meeting with Kalonzo underscores the growing efforts to rally opposition forces against Ruto’s administration.
Kalonzo has been advocating for unity among opposition leaders, and his discussions with Wamalwa may signal a broader plan to bring Western Kenya firmly into the opposition fold.
Wamalwa’s political calculations
Addressing the press after meeting the elders, Wamalwa emphasised the need for unity and strategic engagement. “The Luhya community must remain united and play a key role in shaping Kenya’s political future. We will engage all leaders to ensure our people’s interests are safeguarded,” he said.
