In a recent escalation of internal disputes within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Makadara MP and Nairobi ODM Chairman, George Aladwa, has issued a stern warning to the party’s Secretary-General, Senator Edwin Sifuna.
On Saturday, 22 February 2025, Aladwa alleged that Sifuna is being influenced by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, stating: “He is being used by Gachagua.”
The crux of Aladwa’s accusation centers on Sifuna’s persistent opposition to ODM’s collaborative stance with the current government.
Aladwa contends that Sifuna’s dissent undermines the party’s unity and objectives. He further suggests that if Sifuna is dissatisfied with ODM’s direction, he should consider aligning himself with Gachagua’s faction rather than sowing discord within the party.

Aladwa emphasised: “Here at ODM, we have decided to work together with the government. Sifuna cannot be the secretary-general of the party while he opposes the position of working with the government.”

This internal rift has been brewing, with Sifuna openly criticising the party’s decision to collaborate with the government. He has maintained that ODM officials who accepted cabinet positions did so in their personal capacities, not as representatives of the party.
Sifuna has been vocal about his commitment to holding the government accountable, stating that those weary of advocating for the public should consider leaving ODM and joining the ruling party.
He remarked: “I will continue to speak the truth, and those who are tired of defending Kenyans should leave ODM and join UDA.”
The tension between Aladwa and Sifuna is not an isolated incident. Earlier, during a church service in Nairobi, Sifuna hinted at a potential fallout with ODM, expressing support for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2027 presidential ambitions.
This move was perceived by some within ODM as a deviation from the party’s established leadership and direction.
Aladwa’s recent statements underscore the growing divide within ODM’s leadership. He asserts that Sifuna’s actions are detrimental to the party’s cohesion and warns that continued defiance could lead to Sifuna’s ousting.
Aladwa stated: “Without ODM, where would Sifuna have gotten the votes to become Nairobi Senator? He has no votes here, and the path he has taken will cost him politically in 2027. He should leave ODM; otherwise, we will remove him.”
