Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has claimed that Azimio leader Raila Odinga lost the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid due to President William Ruto’s strained relationships with other African heads of state.
Speaking during a press briefing on Saturday, 22 February, 2025, Kalonzo accused Ruto’s administration of failing to rally enough continental support for Raila, alleging that Kenya’s diplomatic ties have suffered under Ruto’s leadership.
“The loss of the AUC seat is not about Raila Odinga’s credentials. He is a respected Pan-Africanist. The problem is that President Ruto has created unnecessary friction with fellow African leaders, and that played a big role in this outcome,” Kalonzo stated.
According to Kalonzo, the Kenyan government should have taken a more strategic approach to lobbying for Raila’s bid instead of engaging in what he termed as “political chest-thumping.” He pointed out that other countries with better diplomatic relations would naturally have an advantage in such high-profile continental positions.

The Wiper boss further argued that Kenya’s foreign policy under Ruto has been characterized by arrogance and inconsistency, which he believes made it difficult for Raila to secure the necessary votes.
“If the government had mended fences and fostered unity with other African nations, the outcome would have been different,” he added.

Raila and Kalonzo
Kalonzo’s remarks come amid growing political debate on the implications of Raila’s failed bid, with some leaders questioning Kenya’s standing in regional and continental affairs. Meanwhile, the government has yet to respond to Kalonzo’s accusations.
Raila had expressed interest in taking over from the current AUC Chair, Moussa Faki, positioning himself as a seasoned Pan-Africanist with vast political experience.
His campaign was backed by his vision for Africa’s economic and political unity. However, despite his strong profile, reports indicate that Kenya’s diplomatic push fell short, with several African nations hesitant to support his candidacy due to strained relations with Ruto’s administration.
