The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an investigation into the murder of prominent Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down on Tuesday evening along Magadi Road.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, detectives revealed that a homicide team, led by the Nairobi Regional Criminal Intelligence Officer, was immediately dispatched to the scene. The area was secured and examined by experts from the DCI Homicide Bureau and the National Forensic Laboratory, who recovered key evidence, including spent cartridges.
“The DCI is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice. Our investigators are employing all available resources and expertise to piece together the events surrounding this incident,” the statement read.
The agency urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with detectives, noting that any credible leads could help fast-track the probe.
How the fatal attack unfolded on Magadi Road
Preliminary reports indicate that Mbobu had spent the evening attending meetings in Nairobi’s Central Business District before heading home. He reportedly drove from the CBD to Lang’ata Road, branching off into Magadi Road with the intention of connecting through the Catholic University of Eastern Africa route.

At around that time, while stuck in a traffic snarl-up, two armed men riding on a motorcycle pulled up beside his car and opened fire. Mbobu was shot five times in the head, dying instantly at the scene.
Police later recovered three used cartridges at the site of the attack. Detectives believe the assailants exploited the traffic congestion to execute the shooting before escaping.
Motive of the murder yet to be established
Authorities have yet to reveal any arrests or possible motives behind the killing. Mbobu, a respected Senior Advocate, was well known within Kenya’s legal fraternity, and his sudden death has sent shockwaves through the profession.
The DCI called on Kenyans with any useful information to report to the nearest police station or contact investigators directly.

Legal experts and colleagues have condemned the attack, urging swift justice. Human rights defenders have also raised concerns about the growing insecurity faced by lawyers and other professionals in the country.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue piecing together the final movements of Mbobu and the circumstances that led to the deadly ambush.
