Roysambu, Nairobi, descended into chaos on Sunday, 9 March 2025, as angry youths, mostly from the Gen Z demographic, attempted to ‘occupy’ Jesus Winner Ministries, demanding that Pastor Edward Mwai return Ksh20 million donated to his church by President William Ruto last Sunday.
The protest, which began in the early morning hours, quickly escalated as anti-riot police were deployed to disperse the agitated crowd. Tear gas canisters filled the air as officers battled to control the situation, with protesters chanting slogans against what they termed as “misuse of public funds.”
‘Tired of politicians’
“We are tired of politicians using churches as money laundering institutions,” said Brian Odhiambo, a protester. “We want that money returned to taxpayers. This is not about religion, it’s about accountability.”
Despite heavy police presence, the youths insisted they would not leave until their demand was addressed. Several journalists covering the chaos were injured in the melee, with some accusing police of using excessive force.

Earlier in the day, during his morning service, Pastor Mwai appeared unshaken by the protests. Addressing his congregation, he declared that he had “forgiven” those who had insulted him online over the donation.
“As a servant of God, I choose to forgive all who have spoken against me,” Pastor Mwai said. “I will not engage in politics, for my calling is to preach the gospel.”
However, his remarks did little to calm the furious protesters outside the church. Political analysts weighed in, arguing that the growing frustration among young Kenyans signals deep-seated grievances about governance and financial accountability.
“This is not just about Ksh20 million; it’s about the larger issue of public funds being funneled into questionable causes,” said analyst Robert Nyamweya.
By mid-morning, the situation remained tense, with heavy police deployment in the area. Protesters vowed to continue their demonstrations in the coming days if their demands were not met.
