Wamuchomba threatens demos over MP's anti-Kikuyu remarks

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has threatened to lead massive demonstrations over remarks by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominated MP Joseph Wainaina, which have sparked outrage over their alleged incitement against members of the Kikuyu community living in the Rift Valley.

Wamuchomba said Wainaina’s remarks were unacceptable and demanded that his nomination be revoked with immediate effect.

Speaking to Inooro FM on Monday, August 31, 2026, the Githunguri legislator accused the nominated MP of betraying the interests of the communities he was appointed to represent.

“Hon Wainaina was nominated to represent the farming and business groups in the Rift Valley region. He should be defending them instead of inciting they be chased away,” Wamuchomba said.

“He has wronged us gravely.”

Wainaina was captured in a video clip over the weekend while addressing residents of Ngeria area in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County, where he warned members of the Gikuyu community who do not support President William Ruto that they should leave the region.

His remarks have triggered widespread condemnation, with political leaders calling for his arrest and urging the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to summon him over the statements.

Wainaina appeared to link his remarks to voting patterns among Kikuyu residents in the Rift Valley and the outcome of the recent Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election on July 16, 2026.

“This time, whoever will not vote for us; whoever does not want William Ruto here should start packing up, even before saying that William Ruto should move from one side to the other….we should tell the truth,” he said.

“When William comes to this side, others should move to the opposite.”

Wamuchomba demands action

Wainaina further said Kikuyu residents who did not support Ruto should be punished by members of their own community.

“Let us remain silent. We, the Kikuyu community are the one who will punish those Kikuyus who don’t want William Ruto here,” he said.

He also declared that Ruto’s only obstacle to re-election would be death, while calling on those opposed to the President and UDA to leave the region.

“The only reason that will make William Ruto not to be re-elected is death; and we are praying to God not to take him. But he will be voted,” Wainaina said.

“Its better they start leaving first.”

“We agreed that those who don’t want William Ruto and our UDA party should leave first, we vote when they are not here.”

Wainaina also questioned the loyalty of Kikuyu voters, citing the Ol Kalou by-election as evidence of what he described as difficulties in trusting the community.

“You see, sometimes you Kikuyus are difficult to be trusted because of Ol Kalou [by-election] outcome…”

Wamuchomba said the remarks risked undermining peaceful coexistence among communities and demanded swift action against Wainaina.

“His nomination should be revoked with immediate effect,” she said.

“If he will not be arrested, I will lead massive demonstrations to protest against his remarks.”

The controversy comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders increasingly using community and regional voting patterns to rally support.

By the time of going to press, UDA had not issued an official statement on Wainaina’s remarks or Wamuchomba’s demand for the revocation of his nomination.
