Wavinya Cup returns with 650 teams and 13,000 players

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has launched the fourth edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup football tournament, bringing together 650 teams and more than 13,000 players drawn from all 40 wards across Machakos County.

The launch, held at the White House Grounds, on Friday, September 11, marked the beginning of another season of grassroots sporting competition aimed at identifying, nurturing and promoting football talent among young people in the county.

Beyond football, this year’s tournament has expanded its focus to include transformative community outreach initiatives designed to empower participants both on and off the field.

The initiatives will include mental health awareness and resilience programmes, voluntary HIV counselling and testing, career mentorship and skills training. Through these programmes, participants will have opportunities to acquire practical skills, build resilience, make informed decisions and prepare for their future beyond the football pitch.

Building a sports talent pipeline

Governor Wavinya said the tournament forms part of her administration’s broader vision of positioning Machakos as a premier sports incubator in the region while transforming the county into a world-class sports tourism hub.

“We are building Machakos into a premier sports incubator in East Africa and transforming our home into a world-class sports tourism hub where talent is discovered, nurtured, polished and exported to the world’s biggest arenas,” she said.

The governor said the tournament was designed to provide young footballers with a structured pathway through which promising talent can be identified at the grassroots and supported to reach higher levels of competition.

Theme

This year’s theme, “From the Ward to the World,” captures the ambition of creating a clear progression for young players to move from ward-level competitions to national, continental and global stages.

The expansion of the tournament’s social programmes also reflects an effort to use sport as a vehicle for broader community development. Organisers say the activities will equip young people with knowledge and skills that can contribute to healthier lifestyles, responsible decision-making and personal development.

With hundreds of teams participating across the county, the Governor Wavinya Cup is expected to provide a major platform for young footballers to showcase their abilities and compete at grassroots level.

The tournament continues to combine sporting competition with mentorship, social development and community empowerment, strengthening its role in creating opportunities for young people across Machakos.

As the fourth edition gets underway, the “From the Ward to the World” vision seeks to ensure that talent emerging from Machakos receives the support needed to progress from local fields to bigger sporting arenas.
