Wavinya Cup: Matungulu teams secure Sub-County slots

The fourth edition of the Governor Wavinya Ndeti Cup football tournament continued to generate excitement across Matungulu Sub-County last weekend, with teams from five wards battling for the opportunity to represent their respective areas at the Sub-County level.

The tournament, which provides a competitive platform for young footballers to showcase their talent, skills and determination, produced a series of entertaining encounters as teams competed for qualification in both the men’s and ladies’ categories.

In Tala Ward, Celtic Tysa FC secured the men’s ticket after registering a convincing 2-0 victory over Nationale FC.

The win earned Celtic Tysa FC a place at the Sub-County stage, where they will face champions from other wards.

In the ladies’ category, Katine Queens booked their place at the next stage after overcoming Kikaatini Queens 3-1 in an action-packed encounter.

In Matungulu East Ward, Katwanyaa Lions edged Itheuni FC 1-0 to claim the men’s slot. The closely fought match was decided by the narrowest of margins, with Katwanyaa Lions doing enough to secure progression.

Katwanyaa Starlets completed the ward’s double qualification after defeating Itheuni Queens 2-0 to win the ladies’ slot.

Kyumbuni FC, Donyo Queens qualify

Matungulu North Ward will be represented by Kyumbuni FC and Donyo Queens. Kyumbuni FC delivered one of the weekend’s most emphatic results, thrashing Kathama United 4-0 to seal the men’s qualification.

Donyo Queens, meanwhile, secured the ladies’ berth after edging Kathama Queens 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter.

In Kyeleni Ward, Modern FC advanced after a thrilling 5-4 victory over Athletico in a high-scoring men’s contest. The match produced plenty of attacking action, with Modern FC eventually holding on to claim the ward’s ticket.

In the ladies’ category, Wolves Queens emerged victorious from a round-robin competition to secure their place at the Sub-County level.

In Matungulu West, Mackenzie FC maintained an impressive run by overpowering Kalandini FC 3-0. The result earned Mackenzie FC the men’s qualification slot and secured their progression to the next stage of the tournament.

Kantafu Queens completed the qualification list from the ward after emerging victorious in the ladies’ round-robin competition.

Focus shifts to next five wards

With the first group of five wards having completed their qualification contests, attention now turns to another cluster of five wards next weekend. More teams will enter the competition hoping to claim their ward slots and keep their championship ambitions alive.

The Governor Wavinya Cup continues to provide a competitive stage for footballers across the county, giving emerging players an opportunity to showcase their abilities while competing for honours at progressively higher levels.

As the tournament moves into its next phase, the successful teams from Matungulu will now look ahead to the Sub-County contests, where they will compete against other ward champions in the race to determine this year’s Governor Wavinya Cup champions.
