A coalition of Kenyan women leaders has come out strongly in support of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, who has been facing public scrutiny over her prolonged absence from office following childbirth.
The leaders, in a unified statement, called for respect, empathy, and a fair political environment that acknowledges the realities of motherhood in leadership.
Governor Kihika recently gave birth to twins, an event celebrated by many but also met with criticism over her extended maternity leave.

Addressing the concerns, the women leaders reaffirmed their support for the governor, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing health and family responsibilities alongside public service.
“As women leaders of Kenya, we stand in solidarity with Governor Susan Kihika. Childbirth is a natural and deeply personal process, and we must recognize the challenges that come with it,” the leaders said in their joint statement. “We celebrate her resilience as a leader and as a mother, and we urge society to embrace a more inclusive approach to leadership.”
Motherhood and leadership: No woman should have to choose
The leaders condemned the growing trend of gendered attacks on women in leadership, arguing that female politicians should not be expected to sacrifice their well-being to meet unrealistic societal expectations.
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu strongly defended Governor Kihika’s right to take maternity leave, stating, “Motherhood is not a weakness. It is a strength. Women leaders should not be forced to choose between serving the public and caring for their families. Governor Kihika is a capable leader, and her team continues to run Nakuru County efficiently in her absence.”
Tabitha Mutemi, a vocal advocate for women’s rights, echoed the same sentiments, emphasizing the need for institutions to support female leaders. “It is time we move away from outdated gender biases. Governor Kihika deserves the same respect and support that any other leader would receive in a similar situation. The expectation that women should work through critical family moments is unfair and unjust,” she remarked.
Call for institutional support and gender equality in leadership
The women leaders urged institutions at all levels to implement policies that accommodate the needs of women in leadership positions. They highlighted that gender equality must go beyond mere representation and include structures that support women in balancing leadership and caregiving responsibilities.
“The advancement of gender equality must be accompanied by policies that uphold the dignity of women,” the statement read. “It is time for society to understand that women can be leaders and mothers at the same time without facing unnecessary criticism.”

They further emphasized that Governor Kihika’s absence has not hindered the operations of Nakuru County, as governance continues under the leadership of her deputy and executive team. The leaders called on the public to exercise patience and understanding, asserting that leadership does not pause because of motherhood but is instead enriched by the diverse experiences women bring to the table.
Demands for a fair political environment
The coalition issued several demands to ensure women leaders are treated fairly and respectfully, including:
- An end to gendered attacks on Governor Susan Kihika and other women leaders.
- Respect for the rights of women leaders to take legally recognized maternity leave without facing political bullying.
- A fair political environment where leadership is judged by performance and integrity, not gender or motherhood.
A message of support and encouragement
Concluding their statement, the women leaders assured Governor Kihika of their unwavering support.
“To our dear sister, Governor Susan Kihika, we stand with you. We celebrate your resilience, and we look forward to your full recovery and return to service,” they stated. “You can lead. You can be a mother. You can be both. And we will stand together to ensure that no woman is ever forced to choose between the two.”

Their powerful message reaffirmed the need for a society that values inclusivity, empathy, and fairness in leadership, ensuring that women in politics receive the support they deserve.
A politically charged environment
In what appears to be an escalation of political attacks, reports emerged that a Kenyan had written to U.S. President Donald Trump, demanding Kihika’s deportation to Kenya.
While the letter has been widely dismissed as a desperate political stunt, it underscores the intensity of opposition she has faced.
