Nyandarua Senator John Methu is set to shave his long hair after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua officially launches his new political party in May.
The announcement was made by Gachagua during a church service on Sunday, 27 April 2025, at St. Louis-Igwamiti Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Nyahururu, Nyandarua County, where he was addressing faithful and local leaders.
“This [Senator] Methu has told me that he will shave his hair when we launch our new political party in May,” Gachagua said, drawing laughter and applause from the congregation.
Methu, a well-known figure in the region, has become increasingly popular for his distinctive long hair, which has earned him the nickname “Gitungati Original,” a reference to the heroes of the Mau Mau movement. His hairstyle has become symbolic among his followers, further strengthening his association with the community’s historical struggles and resistance.
Methu’s loyalty and hair-shaving gesture
The Senator’s decision to shave his hair marks a significant moment in his political journey. Known for his steadfast support of Gachagua, Methu has built a strong reputation among his followers and within the larger Mt. Kenya political landscape.
Former Subukia MP Koigi wa Wamwere had also grown long hair, and shaved it after former president Daniel Moi was defeated by Mwai Kibaki-led NARC coalition in the 2002 general elections.
His loyalty to Gachagua was especially visible during the heated political climate of October 2024, when Methu was one of the leaders who voted against Gachagua’s impeachment, a move that solidified his role as a reliable ally of the former Deputy President.

Methu’s connection to Gachagua has also made him a prominent figure in local politics, and his actions have continued to garner attention. His willingness to undergo a public transformation by shaving his hair in solidarity with Gachagua’s political endeavors has become a point of curiosity among many.

As news of Methu’s hair-shaving plans spreads, several individuals from within the community have even offered to contribute financially to help the Senator with the process, suggesting they wish to see it happen in a local barber shop as a show of support.
According to political analysts, this will be a symbol of unity and a visual representation of Methu’s full commitment to Gachagua’s cause.
The launch of Gachagua’s new party in May is expected to be a key moment in Nyandarua County’s political scene, with both Gachagua and Methu hoping to galvanize local support and strengthen their political base.
Methu’s symbolic gesture of shaving his hair is seen as an important step in reinforcing his commitment to Gachagua’s new political venture, as they aim to chart a new course for the region’s future.
