Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were was fatally shot on Wednesday night in what police suspect was a targeted assassination near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker was ambushed at approximately 7:30 p.m. by two assailants on a motorcycle, according to eyewitnesses.
Police reports indicate that the gunmen had been following the MP’s vehicle before one of them alighted and fired several shots at close range, striking Were multiple times. He was critically injured in the attack and later pronounced dead upon arrival at Nairobi Hospital.
His driver, who was in the car during the incident, escaped unharmed—a detail that has led investigators to suspect that the attackers had specifically intended to kill the MP.

The brazen shooting reportedly occurred in full view of traffic police officers stationed at the roundabout.
Were, who was serving his second term as the MP for Kasipul constituency in Homa Bay County, was first elected in 2017 on an ODM ticket. Before venturing into politics, he was a respected educationist, having worked with the Ministry of Education and championed reforms in Kenya’s public education sector.
News of his death has shocked ODM officials and fellow legislators, who have condemned the killing and called for urgent investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice.
