Joe Biden, the 82-year-old former President of the United States, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to an official statement released on Sunday. The diagnosis follows a medical consultation last week due to worsening urinary symptoms.
According to the statement, doctors identified a prostate nodule, and subsequent tests revealed a high Gleason score of 9 out of 10, categorizing the cancer as high-grade. This type of prostate cancer is known for its rapid spread, making it a serious concern. However, Biden’s office confirmed the disease is hormone-sensitive, suggesting it may be effectively managed with appropriate treatment.

The former president and his family are currently exploring treatment options. Experts suggest hormone therapies may be the first line of action to control symptoms and slow progression.
Political leaders and former colleagues have expressed support. President Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Barack Obama all offered their well-wishes, noting Biden’s long-standing commitment to cancer research. In 2016, Biden led the “cancer moonshot” initiative, and he relaunched it in 2022 with the goal of reducing cancer deaths significantly by 2047.
Biden, who stepped down from the 2024 presidential race due to concerns about age and health, has largely remained out of the public spotlight. His most recent public appearance was a keynote address in April.
Despite the grave diagnosis, medical experts remain optimistic. Dr. William Dahut of the American Cancer Society noted that while metastatic prostate cancer is typically not curable, patients often respond well to treatment and can live for many years with proper care.
Biden’s health has been under scrutiny in recent years, especially after he stepped down from the 2024 presidential race. Despite his diagnosis, supporters remain hopeful, drawing strength from Biden’s history of perseverance and advocacy in the fight against cancer.
