Seasoned journalist Dennis Lubanga has been honoured by the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) for his outstanding and impactful reporting on counterfeit-related issues in Kenya.
The award was presented during a ceremony held in Nairobi on Monday, August 3, where Lubanga emerged as the only journalist recognised at the event.
A former journalist with Y News Digital, Lubanga’s dedication to exposing the dangers of counterfeit trade and promoting public awareness earned him the accolade.
His investigative work has consistently highlighted the extent of illicit trade in Kenya and its devastating effects on the economy, local industries, and public safety.
“You have been awarded in recognition and appreciation of your outstanding contribution to public education and impactful reporting on counterfeiting issues thus enhancing the delivery of CA mandate,” the agency said in its awarding certificate.
The recognition adds another feather to Lubanga’s cap, affirming his commitment to public interest journalism. Over the years, he has contributed stories to some of the most respected media houses in Kenya, including Nation Media Group and Tuko News, where he served as Current Affairs Editor.
Leading the fight against counterfeits through journalism
Lubanga’s in-depth reporting has been instrumental in bringing national attention to the prevalence of counterfeit goods and the loopholes that allow the trade to flourish, particularly at Kenya’s border points. One of his standout pieces, “Busia: Porous Kenya-Uganda Border Points Still Conduits of Illicit Counterfeits Trade”, published by Tuko News, delves into how lax enforcement and corruption have turned border areas into hotspots for smuggling fake goods.

In another report titled “Fighting Fakes: Anti-Counterfeit Authority Unveils Ambitious Plan To Eliminate Illicit Goods”, published on Y News, Lubanga documented efforts by the ACA to crack down on the circulation of counterfeit products, showcasing the agency’s strategic interventions and partnerships.
His reporting in the Daily Nation further highlighted the crisis, with a feature titled “Anti-Counterfeit Agency Impounds Sugar Smuggled from Uganda”, exposing the widespread smuggling of substandard goods into the country. These stories have not only informed the public but have also sparked conversations on policy reform and the need for stronger cross-border enforcement mechanisms.
Recognised excellence in journalism
This latest honour comes barely a year after Lubanga was recognised in two major categories at the 12th Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA), held on May 3, 2024. He was named First Runners Up in the Agriculture and Food Security Category – Digital, and also clinched Second Runners Up in the Blue Economy and Business Reporting Category – Digital.

His work not only highlights injustices and challenges but also offers insights into possible solutions—an approach that has earned him both audience trust and professional recognition.
A career anchored in impact
Speaking to Newsflash after receiving the ACA award, Lubanga said that since beginning his journalism career over ten years ago, his focus has remained on writing stories that make a difference.
“I thank the Anti-Counterfeit Authority for this unique recognition. I am very elated. Also, it is a recognition of my work towards ensuring that the stories we write have a positive impact on the society,” said the journalist, who focuses on Environment, Agriculture and Climate Change.
