Vatican City, 8 May, 2025— In a moment of great historical and spiritual significance, the Roman Catholic Church has announced the election of a new pontiff.
The traditional Latin declaration, “Habemus Papam!” echoed from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was introduced to the world as the 267th Pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
The decision was reached after several rounds of voting by the College of Cardinals, who were gathered in solemn conclave within the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. The announcement followed the appearance of white smoke from the chapel chimney, signaling that a consensus had been reached on the new leader of the Church’s more than 1.3 billion faithful worldwide.
First American Pope in histoy
Cardinal Prevost, originally from Chicago, USA, is the first American-born pope in history. Known for his theological depth, administrative experience, and commitment to social justice, Prevost’s elevation to the papacy signals a potentially transformative era for the Church. Prior to his election, he served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a key role within the Roman Curia, where he oversaw the appointment of bishops across the globe.

Taking the name Leo XIV, he becomes the first pope to choose that name in over 170 years. The last pontiff to bear the name Leo was Pope Leo XIII, who reigned from 1878 to 1903 and is widely remembered for his intellectual leadership and landmark encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the rights of workers in the industrial age.
In his first address as pope, delivered from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV spoke in both Italian and English, calling for unity, compassion, and peace in a world beset by conflict and inequality. “Let us walk together in faith, and let us be builders of bridges, not walls,” he said, drawing applause and cheers from the crowds that had gathered in the square below.
Challenges ahead
Pope Leo XIV faces an array of complex challenges as he begins his papacy, including growing secularism in the West, internal debates over Church doctrine, and the need for renewed trust in the wake of abuse scandals. However, many observers believe his pastoral sensitivity and global outlook position him well to address the needs of the modern Church.
Leaders from across the world, including heads of state, religious figures, and lay Catholics, have sent messages of congratulations and prayers. The coming days will see Pope Leo XIV begin the formal work of his papacy, including meetings with Vatican officials and preparing for his installation Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.
