Nation Media Group’s majority shareholder, The Aga Khan, has died aged 88 years.
According to the Aga Khan Development Network, the Aga Khan Prince Karim al-Hussaini died on Tuesday, 4th February, 2025.
His family said the spiritual leader passed on earlier in the day peacefully in Portugal.
A descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, Prince Karim was the 49th imam of the Nizari Ismaili Shia Muslims – a title he’d held since succeeding his grandfather in 1957.
Described as a philanthropist, the Prince was also among the world’s upper echelons of wealth, with an estimated net worth of $13.3billion, according to Forbes.
In the announcement, the Aga Khan Development Network said: “is Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family.
In Kenya, his business empire spans from banking, media, education and health.
Besides Nation Media Group, he also owns Diamond Trust Bank, Agha Khan University (AKU) and the Aga Khan hospitals.
