Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted “something has to change” after his side suffered a humiliating League Cup defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby Town on Wednesday night. The shock exit, sealed by a marathon 12-11 penalty shootout loss after a 2-2 draw, is being described as United’s lowest point since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
The defeat marked the first time in the club’s history that they were eliminated from an English cup competition by a team from the fourth division, deepening the crisis for Amorim.
Pressure Mounts on Amorim
The Portuguese coach, now in his 10th month in charge, appeared visibly shaken during his post-match interview.
“I have no more answers,” Amorim told the BBC. “I think something has to change. The players spoke loud today. Tonight, the best team won, the only team on the pitch.”
The 40-year-old had hoped to turn the page after a dismal 2024/25 season that saw United finish 15th in the Premier League. Backed heavily by the board, Amorim spent over £200 million this summer to bring in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. But results have failed to improve, with United yet to record a win in their opening three matches of the campaign.
Players Admit Lack of Fight
United’s defensive frailties and lack of intensity were brutally exposed by Grimsby. Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot acknowledged that the team had fallen short of expectations.
“We gave the game to them straight away,” Dalot told MUTV. “They won duels, second balls, set-pieces—we lacked fight. We fought back, but that’s the minimum for our fans and this club. It wasn’t good enough.”
The words echoed the frustration of supporters, many of whom booed the players off at full time.

A Club in Crisis
Since Ferguson’s retirement, United have cycled through six permanent managers—Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag, and others—without restoring the club to consistent title contention. Despite heavy investment, Amorim’s record now stands at 19 defeats and 17 wins in charge, a statistic critics say proves his tactics are failing.
His commitment to a rigid 3-4-3 system has been questioned, with pundits suggesting the formation leaves United too vulnerable defensively while failing to maximize attacking talent.

Grimsby Boss Defends Amorim
In a surprising twist, Grimsby manager David Artell came to Amorim’s defense after masterminding the famous victory.
“Ruben Amorim needs time,” Artell said. “You don’t become Manchester United manager without proving your quality. He is an excellent coach, and if given time, he can bring the club back to the top table. He is a good guy, and I respect him.”
Upcoming Fixture Against Burnley
Amorim’s immediate challenge is to rally his squad for a crucial Premier League clash at Old Trafford against newly promoted Burnley on Saturday. Burnley come into the fixture with momentum after defeating Sunderland 2-0.
“In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend,” Amorim said. “After that, we can think about the future.”
But the future may already be slipping away. Another defeat could prove decisive for Amorim, with reports suggesting the board’s patience is wearing thin.
What Next for United?
United’s loyal supporters have grown weary of excuses, and pressure is mounting for results. With expectations at Old Trafford still sky-high, Amorim’s survival may depend on his ability to adapt quickly and deliver wins.
For now, the manager’s words—“something has to change”—ring louder than ever. The question remains: will Amorim be the man to bring about that change, or will he join the long list of managers who failed to revive Manchester United’s glory days?
