The Ministry of Education has confirmed the placement of 211,636 learners to Grade 10 of Senior School following a review of initial placement applications, marking a key milestone in the national transition to senior secondary education.
The placement process, which began on December 14, 2025, and concluded on December 19, has now been fully updated to accommodate learners seeking a change in their school assignments.
Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba, announced the final review results on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, noting that learners who applied for review between December 23 and 29 can now access their placement outcomes on the official portal. “Following careful consideration of 355,457 review applications, a total of 211,636 learners have been successfully approved for placement in line with their preferences,” said Ogamba.
High demand for prestigious schools
While thousands of learners were successfully placed, a significant number of applications were declined due to limited capacity or the unavailability of preferred subject combinations. For instance, some elite schools such as Alliance High School, Kenya High School, and Mangu High School received up to 20,000 applications each, yet the average available slots per school were around 500.

Learners whose applications could not be accommodated have been informed and advised on alternative options.
Despite these challenges, the Ministry reports that 88 per cent of learners have now secured placement in either their original or revised school selections. This reflects an improvement in the alignment of student preferences with available spaces, even as competition remains intense for top-performing schools and sought-after subject streams.
Pathways and next steps
The distribution of learners across academic pathways shows that 51 per cent have been placed in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) pathway, 38 per cent in the Social Sciences pathway, and 11 per cent in the Arts & Sports Science pathway. This demonstrates the continued national emphasis on STEM education, while maintaining diversity in academic opportunities for all learners.
Learners who are not yet satisfied with their placement will have another opportunity to apply for further review from January 6 to 9, 2026.

Joining instructions for those successfully placed are now available for download on the placement portal, allowing students to prepare for the start of the academic term.
Ogamba emphasized the importance of ensuring that learners transition smoothly into senior school, highlighting the Ministry’s commitment to providing equitable access to education. “Our focus remains on placing learners in schools that best match their interests, abilities, and career aspirations,” he said, urging parents and guardians to assist students in making informed decisions.
