DCI confirms Gachagua’s claims on police role in Dr Mutiso killing

An hour after Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua claimed that police officers were behind the shooting and killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso on July 29 in Nairobi, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that three police officers were implicated in the murder.

In a statement on Friday, August 7, DCI Director-General Mohamed Amin named the officers as Inspector (IP) Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, Officer-in-Charge of Nderi Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station; No. 91232 Police Constable (PC) Elijah Kibelion Kimoi of Karinde Police Post; and PC Bett Kiplangat Collins of Thogoto Police Post, both under Kikuyu Police Station.

Amin said Sang was the link between the financiers and the team and was also the source of the firearm allegedly used in the murder. He said Sang was on the run.

Kimoi, according to the DCI, had been identified as the officer who pulled the trigger and had been arrested. Collins had been forensically placed at the scene and was being sought.

The development came after Gachagua accused the DCI of attempting to shield police officers implicated in the killing. In a statement issued ahead of Amin’s briefing, Gachagua said he had information identifying the three officers and warned that he would make their identities public if the DCI failed to name them.

“Bwana DCI, I have seen you have called a press conference to cover up the police killers of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and then fix some boda boda riders.

“I have the names of the three police killers from [Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba] Murkomen’s community whom you have been instructed to cover up.

“You must name the inspector from Kikuyu Police Station, the constable from the same police station and the other constable from Karinde police post,” said Gachagua.

DCI details alleged police role

According to Amin, investigations were taken over by the DCI’s Homicide Investigations Bureau on the day of the shooting and supported by forensic experts and intelligence officers.

The DCI said forensic analysis, CCTV examination and intelligence-led operations led investigators to two key suspects, Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia.

Njoroge was identified as a central organiser and allegedly drove a Land Cruiser Prado, registration KDH 600A, which was used to block the Uber vehicle carrying Mutiso shortly before she was shot.

Kinuthia was identified as the rider who allegedly ferried the shooter to the scene.

Investigators also recovered a Mini Jericho pistol, serial number KP 47302127, from the armoury at Nderi Police Post. Records showed the firearm had been issued to Sang.

A ballistic examination allegedly identified the pistol as the weapon used to kill Mutiso.

Land dispute cited as motive

Amin said investigators had established that the killing was allegedly driven by a land dispute involving land parcel LR No. 1504/13 in Mlolongo, Athi River Sub-County.

The DCI said Mutiso had placed a caveat on the property, an action it said was perceived as a threat to the interests of parties involved in its ownership and control.

Investigators linked the dispute to Civil Suit No. ELC/E111/2025 filed by Rose Mbithe Mulwa. The DCI said Mulwa, the ex-wife of Mutiso’s husband, Prof David Musyimi Ndetei, and her son Christopher Mulwa had been identified as primary organisers and financiers of the alleged conspiracy.

The two are in custody after a court granted investigators 21 days on July 31 to complete critical inquiries.

The DCI also revealed that Mutiso had reported a previous incident on July 7, when two men on a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her.

Amin said investigations remained active and vowed that all involved would be pursued, regardless of status or influence. He said investigators were examining possible links between some suspects and the September 2025 shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu along Magadi Road.

The DCI called for information from the public and assured the family that investigations would continue.
