About 25,000 students from Ruiru Sub-county on Saturday, May 9 benefited from National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) bursaries aimed at supporting education and easing the burden of school fees for families.
Ruiru Member of Parliament Simon King’ara led the disbursement exercise where Sh132 million was issued to students who had successfully applied for financial support under the programme.
He noted that although the number of applicants was very high, the available resources could only be distributed within the limits of the current allocation.
Under the arrangement, day school learners each received Sh4,000, while students in secondary schools, middle-level colleges, and universities were awarded Sh7,000 each.

“I wanted every parent who accompanied their child to receive something so that they could support them in going back to school. I did not want anyone to leave empty-handed,” said King’ara.
He added that the bursary programme remains a key intervention in supporting education in the constituency, especially for vulnerable families struggling with school fees.
Call for increased allocation and future support
The MP expressed concern over the rising number of students applying for bursaries, noting that demand continues to outstrip available funding.
He appealed to the national government to increase the bursary allocation in the next budget cycle to ensure more students benefit adequately from the programme.

King’ara further pledged to lobby for improved funding in the coming financial year, saying this would help reduce pressure on parents and ensure continuity in education.
He said the long-term goal is to ensure no learner is forced out of school due to lack of fees.
The event, held at Ruiru Railway Station, attracted a large number of parents and students who turned up to receive assistance.
He further observed that more students registered for bursary support in 2026 compared to 2025, indicating a growing need for educational financial assistance in the area.
