Residents of Thika town in Kiambu County have called for the town to be granted “Smart City” status.
On Wednesday, April 8, the residents—led by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi—unanimously agreed that Thika should be elevated to a Smart City.
The public participation exercise was conducted by the Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations. Senators present included Catherine Mumma (Vice Chairperson), Richard Onyonka, Karungu Wathang’wa, Prof. Margaret Kamar, Mohamed Abass Sheikh (Chairperson), Peris Tobiko, and Hezena Lemaletian.
After stakeholders presented their views, Thika residents were also given an opportunity to share their proposals. Most submissions emphasized the importance of upgrading Thika to Smart City status.
Strong infrastructure and economic base
Healthcare was highlighted as a key strength, with facilities such as Thika Level 5 Hospital, Avenue Hospital, and Aga Khan Clinic serving the town.
Thika also boasts about 200 industries, including Del Monte, Bidco, and Broadway, which are among the major taxpayers to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

In education, the town hosts institutions such as Mount Kenya University and Gretsa University, which attract students from Uganda, Rwanda, and beyond. Primary schools have been modernized, while early childhood education (ECDE) has significantly improved over the past three years, with 512 schools constructed across Kiambu County.
Transport and future plans
In terms of transport, Thika is served by matatus from Saccos such as Maathai, Manchester, and Metro, which connect Nairobi to Thika in about 40 minutes. The Thika Superhighway has further eased travel between the two towns.
Research indicates that Thika has a population of over 300,000 residents, strengthening its case for elevation.

Residents also proposed embracing technology through ICT and artificial intelligence to create employment opportunities for graduates. Security was emphasized as essential to ensure a peaceful living environment.
They further recommended the construction of modern food markets to benefit traders and residents alike. Access to clean water was also highlighted as a priority, especially as the town continues to attract investors and experience population growth.
Additionally, Thika has a large area that could potentially support the development of an airport.
