Kajiado senator Samuel Seki Kanar has formally endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections. The endorsement came on Monday, September 8, after a consultative meeting between the two leaders in Kajiado County.
Speaking after the meeting, Seki said he was confident Matiang’i had what it takes to unseat President William Ruto, praising the former powerful CS for his leadership record and reformist credentials. “Today I was introducing him to our friends because he is our leader, and he is a person we expect to lead the country in the coming years. So we are ready to walk with him, and as the opposition has decided that we must liberate this country, we are sure that he will be the president in 2027,” Seki said.
Matiang’i, who has been holding grassroots consultative engagements since announcing his presidential bid earlier this year, expressed gratitude for the senator’s support. In a statement, he said their discussions focused on shared priorities and the future of the nation. “I am grateful for the Senator’s insights and look forward to continued collaboration in the service of our great people,” he said.
Opposition unity talks to shape 2027 strategy
Seki revealed that ongoing talks within the opposition would determine a single flagbearer to challenge President Ruto in 2027. He mentioned that he expected Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa to eventually rally behind one candidate.
“We shall hold talks with others, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua, to ensure we have one candidate,” the Kajiado senator told reporters.

This signals a possible realignment in the opposition as different camps weigh their options. Matiang’i is among several figures positioning themselves for the ticket, with Kalonzo, Gachagua, and Wamalwa also seen as potential contenders. Analysts say the choice of a single candidate will determine the opposition’s ability to mount a strong challenge to Ruto, who has already declared he will seek re-election.
Matiang’i takes aim at Ruto’s leadership
Beyond seeking endorsements, Matiang’i has also intensified his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration. During a funeral service in Nyasore on August 29, the former Interior CS accused Ruto’s government of pushing the country into unprecedented debt and failing to deliver on campaign promises.
He claimed the administration had resorted to “reckless borrowing” while corruption and mismanagement continued to cripple key government institutions. “We want a government that delivers rather than one that deceives citizens with fake promises,” Matiang’i said during the address.

His remarks were seen as part of his broader effort to frame himself as a reformist alternative to the current leadership. By highlighting economic hardships, the high cost of living, and alleged mismanagement, Matiang’i appears intent on positioning himself as the candidate who can restore integrity and stability in governance.
As the 2027 election season gains momentum, Matiang’i’s growing engagements across the country and endorsements like Seki’s suggest a shifting political landscape. Whether the opposition can unite behind a single candidate remains the central question — one that will shape Kenya’s next presidential race.
