Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of attempting to divide the Mt Kenya region by sponsoring multiple political parties, warning residents to remain cautious.
Speaking on Monday, March 31, at Wangige in Kiambu County, Gachagua alleged that all political parties in the region, except the one he intends to form, are directly linked to the president.
Ruto’s strategy to divide Mt Kenya
“Please beware. Ruto wants to divide us. He wants to create many parties in the Mountain. Apart from the party that I shall form, all others are linked to him,” Gachagua told the crowd.

The remarks come amid growing political tensions in the region, with factions emerging ahead of the 2027 elections. Gachagua, who has been positioning himself as the de facto Mt Kenya leader, has repeatedly clashed with allies of the president over the region’s political direction.
Claims on development projects
Gachagua also criticized the government’s record in Mt Kenya, stating that all major development projects in the region were initiated by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta. He accused Ruto’s administration of failing to complete them and misleading the public.

“All the projects in Mt Kenya were started by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta. There’s no single project that belongs to you. When you come here, tell us which are your projects,” Gachagua said.
He further dismissed the president’s upcoming media engagement with local Kikuyu-language stations Inooro and Kameme, claiming it was an attempt to deceive residents.
“Today, he has called Inooro and Kameme media stations to hoodwink you. He should be told that he should look for some insects to lie to,” he said.
Growing political rift
The latest remarks highlight the widening political rift between Gachagua and Ruto, with analysts predicting a tough battle for control of Mt Kenya politics.
The region, which overwhelmingly supported Ruto in 2022, is increasingly showing signs of political realignment.
With Gachagua now hinting at forming his own political party, the contest for Mt Kenya’s political loyalty is expected to intensify in the coming months.
