Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on Friday released a detailed breakdown of how candidates performed in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
Announcing the results on Friday, January 9, at AIC Chebisaas High School in Uasin Gishu County, CS Ogamba revealed that 1,932 candidates attained a mean grade of A Plain in the 2025 KCSE examinations.
He noted that this marked an improvement from the previous year, when 1,693 candidates achieved the top grade.
1,932 scored straight As
“There were 1,932 candidates, representing 0.19 per cent of the total candidature, who obtained an overall mean grade of A Plain in the 2025 KCSE examination. This shows an improvement compared to the 1,693 candidates who scored an A Plain in 2024,” Ogamba said.
The Education CS further disclosed that 270,715 candidates attained the minimum university entry qualification of C+ and above in the 2025 examinations. According to him, this group accounted for 27.81 per cent of the total candidates.

“The number of candidates who qualified for direct university entry with a mean grade of C+ and above was 270,715, translating to 27.81 per cent. This is an increase compared to 246,391 candidates, or 25.53 per cent, recorded in 2024,” Ogamba stated.
He also announced that 507,131 candidates scored a mean grade of C minus and above, representing 50.92 per cent of the total candidature. In addition, 634,082 candidates attained grade D+ and above in 2025, compared to 605,774 in the previous year.
School categories and results access
CS Ogamba noted that national schools registered the highest number of candidates with an overall mean grade of A Plain. “National schools produced 1,526 candidates with a mean grade of A, followed by extra-county schools with 197 and private schools with 185,” he said.
However, sub-county schools recorded more candidates with C+ and above compared to county schools, accounting for 72,699 candidates.

The Education CS also announced that candidates can access their 2025 KCSE results through the official KNEC online portal. “Individual results will be available online via results.knec.ac.ke. Candidates will be required to enter their index number and one of their registered names as per the 2025 KCSE registration data,” he explained.
The 2025 KCSE examinations were administered by the Ministry of Education between October 21, 2025, and November 21, 2025, across 10,755 examination centres nationwide.
