A bitter war of words and counteraccusations has erupted between allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, shedding light on a once-close alliance that has now crumbled into public discord.
At the heart of the fallout is a failed working relationship that began with optimism but quietly collapsed after Gachagua’s impeachment.
Months before his removal from office, Gachagua had handpicked Ngunjiri Wambugu to lead communication and political strategy at the Office of the Deputy President. The move was seen as a strategic attempt to reshape the DP’s public image and tighten messaging in a politically turbulent environment.
For 14 months, Ngunjiri worked closely with Gachagua, often navigating the murky waters of internal power struggles and public scrutiny.
Even after Gachagua’s impeachment, Wambugu remained part of his close-knit inner circle. Sources confirmed that he was among a handful of loyalists attending private strategy meetings at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Mathira, Nyeri.
Despite this continued loyalty, relations between the two soured, leading to a quiet but definitive fallout. Gachagua’s allies now accuse Ngunjiri of exploiting his influential position for personal gain.
“He used his office to enrich himself. There were several journalists from mainstream media house who were on his payroll,” claimed a source within Gachagua’s camp, suggesting that Wambugu manipulated media networks for Gachagua’s coverage.
Conflicting narratives emerge
These allegations have been fiercely rejected by those close to Wambugu, who insist that he served with integrity under challenging circumstances.
“For over 14 months, Ngunjiri Wambugu served Gachagua with dedication! No better pay, just pure grit. Amidst toxic politics, hate, division, backbiting, unprofessionalism, and a temper that could scare a madman, he persevered. He worked like a donkey, cleaned up messes, and tried to polish what many wouldn’t touch,” said a close ally of Ngunjiri.
The source further lamented the turn of events, accusing Gachagua of publicly vilifying a man who had once been instrumental to his communication strategy.

“Eventually, they parted ways. Like a professional, Ngunjiri exited quietly and moved on. But today, at his own residence, Gachagua spent over an hour hurling insults, false accusations, and dragging Ngunjiri’s name through the mud, claiming bribery and self-enrichment after an impeachment,” the ally added.
The rift has sparked intense debate within political circles, especially among Central Kenya leaders who had observed the former camaraderie between the two politicians. Insiders suggest the feud could further divide loyalists and signal deeper tensions within factions of the former administration.
What began as a promising partnership aimed at rebuilding Gachagua’s political brand has now devolved into a messy fallout marked by bitterness and personal attacks. While neither Gachagua nor Wambugu has officially addressed the matter publicly, the emerging statements from their respective camps hint at deep-seated grievances and unresolved conflicts.
Ngunjiri is training his cards on recapturing the Nyeri Town parliamentary seat in the 2027, currently being held by UDA’s Duncan Mathenge.
Efforts to reach Wambugu in person did not materialize as he did not respond to Newsflash’s phone calls and texts.
Newsflash continues to follow the saga as more details emerge about the fallout between the two former allies.
