The government has announced an increase in Miraa prices.
In a notice issued by the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Mutahi Kagwe on Saturday, 15 February, 2025, the government said that it revised the prices upwards after considering the submissions made by the crop’s farmers and traders.
According to the notice, 1 kg of Grade One Miraa will cost Ksh1,300 from Ksh700. On the other hand, Grade 2 Miraa will cost Ksh700 from Ksh350 while a kilogram of Alele will cost Ksh1,000 from Ksh500.
“These prices take effect immediately. The government will continue to address the market access challenges to expand on export opportunities in our current and new markets,” said Kagwe.
The new prices are also as a result of resolutions made by the Miraa Pricing Formula Committee, which was established to provide advisory on the pricing of miraa.
The committee agreed and passed the new prices after meeting on Thursday, 13 February, 2025.
The new prices have come as a great relief to Miraa farmers, as they have been complaining of the crop’s poor prices.
The crop – classified as a drug in some countries – is mainly grown in Mt Kenya East region comprising Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties.
