Oburu Oginga: I am okay

ODM leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has assured Kenyans that he is in good health, dismissing reports that he had been admitted to hospital due to illness.

Oburu said he had only visited hospital for what he described as “normal check ups” and had since returned home.

His assurance came after reports circulated that the 83-year-old politician had been hospitalised at Nairobi Hospital, sparking concern among Kenyans and his political supporters.

“Thank you for your concerns. I have read the nations digital news and wish to state that I am very well,” Oburu said in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

“I had only briefly visited the hospital for a general check up with my doctors and have since returned home,” he added.

The ODM leader said visiting hospital for medical checks was a normal human experience and urged Kenyans not to be alarmed by reports concerning his health.

“Being sick is a normal human experience and should not alarm anyone. The day I am truly sick, I will inform you all, for I am a very transparent person,” he said.

Reports over hospital admission

Oburu’s clarification followed reports that he had spent several days at Nairobi Hospital, with sources claiming he had been admitted on Saturday, August 29.

The reports indicated that the latest admission was his second hospitalisation within two weeks.

According to the reports, Oburu had initially been admitted on August 23 and discharged on Thursday, August 27. He was reportedly suffering from severe fatigue, with doctors said to have recommended that he rest.

The reports also claimed that his family was considering flying him to the United Kingdom for specialised treatment.

However, the specific cause of the alleged hospitalisation was not disclosed, while the reports about his health had not been independently verified.

Oburu’s statement directly addressed the reports, with the veteran politician insisting that his hospital visit was for a general check-up and that he was now back home.

He thanked Kenyans for their concern and for following up on reports about his health.

“Thanks for your concerns,” he said.

The Siaya Senator was last seen in public on Saturday, August 29, playing golf, with images he shared online showing him in high spirits.
