Former Kieni MP Kanini Kega and Nairobi lawyer Nelson Havi have officially joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democratic for the Citizens Party (DCP), in a move that signals shifting political tides in the Mt Kenya region and parts of Nairobi ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kega, who currently serves in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), ditched the Jubilee Party and formally joined DCP on Tuesday, January 4, 2026.
Kega eyes political comeback
Kega’s move is widely seen as a strategic step toward reclaiming his Kieni parliamentary seat, which he lost in the 2022 General Election to United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Njoroge Wainaina, popularly known as Cieni. Before his defeat, Kega had served two consecutive terms as MP since 2013, making him one of the few leaders in Mt Kenya to hold the seat for a decade.
Political observers note that as UDA’s popularity has wanes in sections of the Mt Kenya region, Kega appears to be aligning himself with what he sees as an emerging political force.

DCP, led by Gachagua, has been positioning itself as an alternative political vehicle in the vote-rich region.
Kega is also said to be banking on his improved relationship with Gachagua.
The two leaders had previously differed politically but have since mended fences following the fallout from the 2022 elections. Their renewed cordial ties are expected to play a key role in Kega’s grassroots re-entry strategy.
While welcoming him, Gachagua declared: “Welcome home Hon Kanini Kega. DCP Party is the home of progressive leaders who desire leadership in the future.”
Havi brings ‘legal firepower’
At the same event, Gachagua also unveiled prominent Nairobi lawyer Nelson Havi as a new member of the party.
Havi, a former president of the Law Society of Kenya, has been vocal in national political debates and is known for his strong opinions on governance and constitutionalism.
Gachagua described Havi as a valuable addition to the party’s leadership pipeline. “DCP party requires great legal minds for legislation, representation and oversight. I am happy to welcome Nelson Havi SC, one of the greatest legal minds in the country, to walk with us in his quest to represent the people of Westlands constituency in the National Assembly,” he said.

Havi has in recent months emerged as a sharp critic of President William Ruto’s administration, frequently weighing in on matters of governance and the rule of law.
His entry into DCP adds legal and intellectual weight to a party that is increasingly presenting itself as a platform for professionals seeking elective office.
The twin defections of Kega and Havi highlight DCP’s growing appeal among leaders seeking fresh political alignments as early manoeuvres for the 2027 contest begin to take shape.
